Hoy celebramos la Fiesta de la Ascención del Señor. En
la Primera Lectura escuchamos que Jesús “ fue elevado
y una nube lo cubrió a la vista de sus discípulos”. Esta
era una manera de decir que Jesús había terminado sus
frecuentes apariciones a los primeros Cristianos después de la
Pascua y estaba entrando en la eterna y gloriosa presencia de
Dios. La Segunda Lectura ( de la carta a los Efesios) habla de
su Gloria y exaltación con Dios: “ a la derecha del Padre en los
cielos, por encima de los principados, autoridades, poder y
dominación…” En estas palabras humanas, San Pablo nos está
hablando de la dimension cósmica de la victoria de Cristo sobre
la muerte, Santanás, todas las fuerzas del Diablo en todas
partes.La gloria y la luz de Cristo nos llena a todos nosotros y al
universo entero. En el momento de la Ascención Jesús dice: “
Recibirán la fuerza de lo alto cuando el Espíritu Santo venga
sobre ustedes, y serán mis testigos…” Entre la Ascención y
Pentecostés ( el próximo Domingo) los primeros Cristianos

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the
Lord. In the First Reading we hear that Jesus “was lifted
up and a cloud took him from their sight”. This is a way
of saying that Jesus was ending his frequent appearances
to the First Christians after Easter and was entering into the timeless,
glorious presence of God. The Second Reading (from Ephesians)
speaks of his glory and exaltation with God: “at his right hand in the
heavens, far above every principality, authority, power and dominion…” In these human words, St. Paul is telling us of the cosmic
dimension of Christ’s victory over sin, death, Satan, all forces of evil
anywhere. Christ’s glory and light fill all of us and our whole universe. At the time of the Ascension Jesus says: “You will receive
power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my
witnesses…” Between Ascension and Pentecost (next Sunday) the
First Christians gathered in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus,
in Jerusalem, waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
May we also pray this week: “Come, Holy Spirit, Come fill our
hearts with the fire of your love so we can be witnesses to Jesus in
our world.”

MINISTRY TO THE SICK AT HOME OR IN HOSPITAL
The pastoral care of the sick at home or in hospital is an important part of parish ministry. If anyone in your family is ill
and in need of the services of a priest for the Sacraments, please
call the Parish Office and the priest on duty will be happy to
visit and minister to the person who is ill. Our parish has Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick who visit parishioners at home
on a regular basis and bring Holy Eucharist and the prayers and
love of our parish community. Please call the Parish Office so
a Eucharistic Minister can be asked to visit the person who is
ill.
In case of emergency, please call the Parish Office immediately and a priest will respond. On Sundays and at other times
when the Parish Office is closed, please listen to the phone
message which will give the Emergency Parish Phone Number
to call so a priest can respond as soon as possible.

La Pastoral del cuidado de los enfermos en casa o en el hospital
es una parte muy importante del Ministerio de la Parroquia. Si un
miembro de su familia está enfermo y necesita la presencia de un
Sacerdote para que le administe los Sacramentos, por favor llame
a la oficina parroquial y el Sacerdote encargado en ese día de este
Ministerio estará dispuesto a asistir a la persona que está enferma.
Nuestra Parroquia cuenta con Ministros de la Eucaristía a los
enfermos, quienes les visitan en sus casas regularmente, les llevan la Sagrada Eucaristía, así como las oraciones y el amor de
nuestra comunidad parroquial. Por favor llame a la oficina si necesita que un Ministro Eucarístico visite en su casa a su enfermo.
En caso de emrgencia, por favor llame a la oficina parroquial
inmediatamente y un Sacerdote le atendrá. En los días en que la
oficina está cerrada por favor escuche el mensaje telfónico que
tiene la Parroquia, ya que en él se le dará el número de emrgencia

Student Council Activities Elections The Student Council held elections last week for the coming school year 2007/2008. Congratulations to all those who participated by voting, running for office, and/or winning their new posts as elected officers. Special

School Registration for Kindergarten through 8th Grade Applications are available for the 2007/2008 school year. There is a
$15.00 application fee at the time you pick up your application. When applying for St. Mary’s Kindergarten program, children must

LA ARQUIDIÓCESIS EMPIEZA EL PROCESO
DE FINANCIAR LOS ACUERDOS FUTUROS EN LOS CASOS CIVILES

El pasado diciembre, la Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles acordó resolver 46 casos civiles en los que el abuso sexual por parte del clero
había sido sospechado. La suma total del arreglo fue de $60 millones, de los que la Arquidiócesis contribuiría aproximadamente unos
$40 millones. Cuando se llegó al final del litigio, escribí:
“Ahora que se ha llegado a este acuerdo, nuestra atención va a dirigirse a la resolución de todos los casos pendientes. Conseguir un
acuerdo en todos aquellos casos va a requerir la participación activa de muchas compañías aseguradoras que cubrían el seguro de
responsabilidad legal durante aquellos años pasados cuando el abuso tuvo lugar. Espero que estas compañías aseguradoras se juntarán con nosotros para movernos hacia un arreglo final de estos casos tan pronto como sea posible”.
En estos últimos meses, abogados, jueces y líderes eclesiásticos han trabajado diligentemente para llegar a un acuerdo que sea justo e
imparcial. Mi oración de cada día es que este proceso continúe ganando fuerza para que en un futuro próximo estos casos puedan ser
decididos justamente.
Aunque ha sido siempre la posición de la Arquidiócesis que las compañías aseguradoras deben cumplir su responsabilidad de financiar la parte mayor de los acuerdos futuros, la Arquidiócesis también debe estar preparada para cubrir su parte en los acuerdos que
vienen. Como también dije en diciembre pasado, esto exigirá que la Arquidiócesis empiece a deshacerse de propiedades para reunir
fondos para solventar los acuerdos, y tambien reevaluar algunos de los servicios y ministerios que ofrece a las parroquias.
La Arquidiócesis no tiene el objetivo de hacer inversiones en propiedades; más bien las propiedades se han adquirido a través de los
años para establecer nuevas parroquias, escuelas, varias instituciones caritativas, conventos, etc. Algunas propiedades se han guardado para futuras parroquias, futuras escuelas, y otras propuestas ministeriales. Nuestra preferencia sería retener todas aquellas
propiedades. Pero no tenemos otro medio de reunir fondos para los acuerdos futuros que vendiéndolas.
Ninguna parroquia o escuela parroquial será cerrada para financiar estos acuerdos, ni se verán afectados sus ministerios esenciales
por estas ventas. Ninguna de las propiedades que están siendo consideradas para venderse están siendo usadas por las parroquias de
la Arquidiócesis.
He decidido nombrar un grupo especial de trabajo constituido por miembros del consejo arquidiocesano de finanzas, los decanos, el
consejo de sacerdotes, y el colegio de consultores para identificar las posibles propiedades elegibles y clasificarlas según su uso y
valor. Se han señalado ya unas 50 propiedades, y se siguen haciendo más apreciaciones para discernir su justo valor de mercado. Se
estudian otras propiedades posibles de ser vendidas.
Con el consentimiento de todas las partes consultadas, he pedido que la primera propiedad mayor para ser vendida sea el Centro
Católico Arquidiocesano (A.C.C.), situado en el Wilshire Blvd, en el área del mid-Wilshire en Los Angeles. Tiene sentido que la
Arquidiócesis empiece este proceso demostrando nuestro serio compromiso en llegar a un acuerdo final en estos casos vendiendo
nuestro edificio administrativo. Luego arrendaríamos otro espacio menor de oficinas para los ministerios y servicios, o volveríamos a
arrendar a otros algún espacio en el mismo edificio.
Renuevo mi compromiso personal y el de la Arquidiócesis de continuar la tarea importante de prevenir cualquier abuso sexual y la
posibilidad de tal abuso por medio de nuestros programas preventivos de entrenamiento, procesos de investigación para todos los
sacerdotes, empleados y voluntarios, y los programas diseñados para nuestros niños y acomodados a su edad para crear un ambiente
seguro en nuestras parroquias y escuelas.
En estos años pasados he dicho con frecuencia que la gracia de Dios es más poderosa que el mal causado por acciones pecaminosas.
Nuestra Iglesia se ha hecho más humilde, más fiel y más centrada en nuestra misión principal: evangelizar a todos en el nombre de
Jesucristo.
Tengo fe de que seremos capaces de avanzar en esta misión con energía renovada y con una creatividad valiente.
Oremos para que la intercesión de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles nos guíe a todos en devolver la salud a las víctimas y la integridad
a la Iglesia.

ARCHDIOCESE BEGINS PROCESS TO FUND
FUTURE SETTLEMENTS IN CIVIL CASES

Last December, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles settled 46 civil cases in which clergy abuse had been alleged. The total settlement
cost was $60 million, with the Archdiocese contributing approximately $40 million of the total amount. At the time of that settlement, I wrote:
“Now that this settlement is finalized, our attention will focus on the resolution of all remaining cases. To reach a settlement in those
cases will require the active participation of the many insurance companies who provided liability insurance during those past years
when abuse occurred. It is my hope that these insurance companies will join all of us in moving steadily toward a final settlement of
these cases as soon as possible.”
Over the past several months, attorneys, judges and Church leaders have been working diligently to fashion a settlement that is fair
and just. It is my daily prayer that this process will continue to intensify, and that in the near future these cases can be fairly settled.
Though it has always been the position of the Archdiocese that the insurance companies must honor their responsibility to fund a
major share of future settlements, the Archdiocese must also be prepared to fund its share of these coming settlements. As I also said
last December, this will require the Archdiocese to begin to dispose of non-essential real estate properties in order to raise funds for
coming settlements, and to re-evaluate some of the services and ministries it provides to parishes.
The Archdiocese does not invest in real estate as a goal; rather, properties were acquired over the years to establish new parishes,
schools, various charitable institutions, convents, etc. Some properties are held for future parishes, future schools, and similar ministry purposes. Our preference would be to retain all of those properties. But we have no other way to raise our share of money for
coming settlements except through such sales.
No parishes or parish schools will be closed to fund these settlements, nor will their essential ministries be affected by these sales.
None of the properties being considered for sale are being used by the parishes of the Archdiocese.
I have established a special working group with membership from the Archdiocesan Finance Council, the Deans, the Council of
Priests, and the College of Consultors to identify possible eligible properties and to rank them according to use and value. Some 50
properties have already been identified, and further appraisals are being sought on their fair market value. Other possible properties
that could be sold are being studied.
With concurrence of our major consultative bodies, I have requested that the first major property to be sold will be the Archdiocesan
Catholic Center, located on Wilshire Blvd., in the mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles. It is only right that the Archdiocese begin this
process by demonstrating our commitment to reach final settlement in these cases by selling our central administrative building. We
would then either lease other lesser office space for our ministries and services, or possibly lease back some space in the existing
building.
I once again renew my pledge and that of the Archdiocese to continue the important work of preventing sexual abuse and the potential for abuse through our abuse prevention training programs, screening procedures for all priests, employees and volunteers, and
our age-appropriate safe environment programs for children in our parishes and schools.
I have often said over these past years that God’s grace is more powerful than the evil of sinful actions. Our Church has become
more humble, more faithful, and more centered upon our primary mission: to evangelize all peoples in the name of Jesus Christ.
I am confident that we will be able to carry forward this mission with renewed energy and with a bold creativity.
Let us pray for the special intercession of Our Lady of the Angels that she will guide all of us in restoring wholeness to victims and
integrity to the Church.
