“Job well done” is extended to the Guild
who had another successful Bazaar. In
addition to assisting the parish financially, the
Guild provides an important social outlet for
many parish members. Thank you!
This weekend we have a Mass of Remembrance where we
honor our loved ones who have died in the past year. A special
word of thanks to the Parish Nurse Ministry who is
coordinating this event.
To continue last week’s theme in this month dedicated to
the Holy Souls we ask ourselves the question: Why do
Catholics pray for the dead? If, as I said, last week, God is God
of the living and not of the dead, why bother to pray at all?
What effect can it have? Again, we refer back to St. Paul’s
doctrine on the Body of Christ-we are united with our loved
ones in a communion of prayer. The Catholic Church teaches
that those who are still undergoing a process of purification
may be aided by our prayers, most specifically the prayers of
the Eucharist. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states in
section 1030: “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but
still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal
salvation; but after death they undergo a purification, so as to
achieve the holiness necessary to enter heaven.” What is the
basis for this teaching? As in all things, Scripture and
Tradition. The second book of Maccabees states that Judas
offered an expiatory sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins of
comrades who fell in battle: “He then took up a collection
among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver
drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an
expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent
and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead
in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it
would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death.
But if he did this with a view to the splendid award that awaits
those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and
pious thought.” (2 Macc 12: 43-45) This text, combined with 1
Cor 3:15 and 1 Pet 1:7, forms the church’s understanding of
the “purifying fire” that some souls must undertake before
entering heaven. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in
1032, summarizes the tradition using the words of St. John
Chrysostom: “From the beginning, the church has honored the
memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them,
above all the Eucharistic Sacrifice, so that thus purified they
may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also
commends almsgiving, indulgences and works of penance
undertaken on behalf of the dead. ‘Let us not hesitate to help
those who have died and offer prayers for them.’”
This weekend as we celebrate the Eucharist let us heed the
words of Hebrews 12: 22-24: “You have not approached that
which could be touched and a blazing fire and gloomy
darkness and storm….No, you have approached Mount Zion
and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and
countless angels in festal gathering, and the assembly of the
firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all, and the
spirits of the just made perfect.” The expiatory sacrifice that
brings us all peace is the Mass. How privileged we are to
participate in the liturgy of heaven and assist our loved ones
with our prayers. May God be praised!

SANTA’S HELPER DAY: Saturday, December 11th from
10:00-2:30 in the parish center. Drop off your children so you
can get some Christmas shopping done – 4 ½ hours worth!
We will care for and occupy them with games and fun. Bring
a bagged lunch; we will supply drinks and deserts. Cost; $15
per child, $25 for family of more than 1 child. Proceeds benefit
the life teen ministry.
STEUBENVILLE EAST 2011 DATE ANNOUNCED: July
22-24th @ the University of Rhode Island. We have many
opportunities for you to earn all of the $ you need to attend this
retreat and join 4,000 other teens!! Come to life teen on
Sunday nights to hear more. Also, help us decide if we should
go to NorthBay summer camp in August again with Righteous
B!!

Nurses’ Notes
Pertussis or Whooping Cough
Should you be vaccinated?? Pertussis, also know as whooping
cough is a highly infectious bacterial illness. Pertussis is
known for uncontrollable, violent coughing which often makes
it hard to breathe. After fits of many coughs, someone with
pertussis often needs to take deep breathes which result in a
“whooping” sound.
It can start out like a cold and after a week or two develop into
a very severe cough.
A prior case of pertussis might provide some immunity but it’s
still a good idea to get the shot if under age 65, especially if
you have contact with infants. You should get a booster shot
every 10 years up to age 65.
The Bell Town Council 6190 of the Knights of Columbus
would like to report an active month at St. Patrick’s here in
East Hampton. We are pleased to announce that we were able
to effect the repair of our commercial refrigerator in the parish
kitchen. We were able to avoid the $6,800 parish expense
with a very modest repair bill. The council was able to support
the 40 days initiative that our Parish participated in this year.
The Knights took the hours of the night. John Robida and his
family were named Knight’s family of the month. The reasons
are self evident with all they have done for our Parish over the
years. Fern Martin was named Knight of the Month based on
the gardening an beautification he has done on our Parish
grounds. The Knights would like to thank all that helped and
supported our spaghetti supper. It was a successful event
again this year.

Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
Brothers and sisters, the end of the world is coming! Not the
end that we see in movies; Jesus assures us, though, that
history will have an end, and we must be prepared. Most of the
apocalyptic entertainment that we see dwells on the signs—
earthquake, destruction, firestorms. Little is said about God’s
role in the final days. But Jesus has plenty to say on the
subject. Let us pray today for the faith that we will need to
endure whatever trails come our way.

29th Annual Convocation for the
Priests in the Diocese of Norwich
The Annual Convocation for Priests will be held from
November 29 through December 1, 2010, at the Hyatt
Regency on Goat Island in Newport, RI. It will be a time for
all priests to gather with their bishop for spiritual renewal,
support, education and rest. No parish school or institutional
activities will be scheduled during these days. Please pray for
your priests, as they will be praying for you.
Father Nagle will be attending.
The theme of this year’s Convocation is be “Personal and
Physical Wellness: The Path to a Whole and Holy Life.”
The key presenters will be Dr. Juan A. Sanchez, MD, who is
the Chair of the Stanley J. Dudrick Department of Surgery at
Saint Mary’s Health System in Waterbury, CT. His area of
expertise is in Cardiothoracic Surgery and healthy living. His
wife Lise Sanchez, is a certified Dietician and will be
speaking about keeping a healthy diet. In addition, Dr.
Edward Kudej, who is a Chiropractor and Physical Therapist,
and his wife, Mary Schianno Kudej, also a Physical
Therapist and Trainer, will be addressing the areas of physical
health and well being.
