To make Jesus ever more known and loved in the Blessed Sacrament should be the goal of all evangelization efforts. Each of us, like John the Baptist, must say “I must decrease and He (Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament) must increase.” Our reverence for and devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament is highly indicative of how we will treat other people. If we do not treat Jesus in the Eucharist with respect, how can we say that we will treat our neighbors with respect? Every Friday we are blessed to have adoration of the most blessed sacrament with exposition. Have you considered spending some time with our Lord? The following excerpt is from Thomas Merton’s book The Living Bread: "Christianity is more than a doctrine. It is Christ Himself, living in those whom He has united to Himself in one mystical body. It is the mystery by which the Incarnation of the Word of God continues and extends itself throughout the history of the world, reaching into the souls and lives of all men until the final completion of God’s plan. Christianity is the ‘reestablishment of all things in Christ.’ (Eph 1:10) Now Christ lives and acts in men by faith and the sacraments of faith. The greatest of all the sacraments, the crown of the whole Christian life on earth, is the Sacrament of charity, the Blessed Eucharist, in which Christ not only gives us grace but actually gives us Himself. For in this most Holy Sacrament Jesus Christ is truly and substantially present, and remains present as long as the consecrated species of bread and wine continue in existence. The Blessed Eucharist is therefore the very heart of Christianity since it contains Christ Himself, and since it is the chief means by which Christ mystically unites the faithful to Himself in one Body.” In the song “Wisdom’s Feast” the first verse states: “Wisdom calls throughout the city, knows our hunger, and in pity gives her loving invitation to the banquet of salvation.” Christ calls out to us from the Eucharist. Accept His invitation. As Merton notes: “Christianity is more than a doctrine. It is Christ Himself.” The Eucharist is more than a doctrine. It is Jesus Christ Himself. Treasure this gift and share this gift with others! Page Four June 2, 2013 Parish Events St. Patrick Library is located in the workroom of the Parish Center. All are welcome! MATRIMONY A beautiful sacrament full of blessings, romance, love, commitment, comedy, giving, new life, joys, sorrows, adventure, challenges, responsibilities, growth, memories and more. “Do you know what it means to come home at night to a woman who'll give you a little love, a little affection, a little tenderness? It means you're in the wrong house, that's what it means.” (Henny Youngman) THE FOUR STATES OF LIFE: 1. You believe in Santa Claus 2. You don't believe in Santa Claus 3. You become Santa Claus 4. You start to look like Santa Claus. BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS Don’t forget to have your Blood Pressure checked NEXT WEEKEND. The Parish Nurses will be available to take your blood pressure after the 5:00 vigil Mass on Saturday and the 10:30 Mass on Sunday. Question to Ponder: What can I do this week to express more devotedly my belief in Jesus’ real presence in the Eucharist, and to witness more practically to my belief in Jesus’ real presence in “the hungry crowd”? This is a gift that we celebrate weekly, some of us even daily - Christ’s Body and Blood given for our salvation and for our nourishment. We are so familiar with it that every now and then we need a reminder of how profound a gift it is. So let us give thanks and praise to God especially today for this great gift of the Eucharist. Page Six June 2, 2013 JUNE HEALTH TIP Summer Fun in the Sun FUN QUIZ: - I can’t get skin cancer, because my normal routine (such as work, drive to work, hobbies, and vacations) doesn’t include any outdoor activities. -The Correct Answer is FALSE. Brief sun exposures all year round can add up to major damage for people especially with fair skin. - If I’m wearing sunscreen, I can stay in the sun as long as I want. The Correct Answer is FALSE. The American Cancer Society recommends that people seek shade and limit time in the sun at midday. Also, cover up with a shirt, wear a wide-brimmed hat, use a sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher, and reapply it at least every 2 hours. And don’t forget sunglasses for eye protection. - A sunscreen labeled SPF 30 blocks twice as much UV radiation as one labeled SPF 15. The Correct Answer is FALSE. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) describes how long the product will protect your skin from burning if you apply the sunscreen correctly. Be sure to choose a broad-spectrum product that blocks UVB and UVA light, and use a lot. - What are the two most common (and painful!) sunscreen mistakes? The Correct Answer is using too little Sunscreen and waiting too long to reapply. Take these steps to stay sun-safe: Cover up: When you are out in the sun, wear clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV light. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of at least 30: Be sure to reapply at least every 2 hours, as well as after swimming or sweating. Seek shade: Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest. Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps: Both can cause serious long-term skin damage and contribute to skin cancer. American Cancer Society LOVE THEM BOTH The number of abortions in the United States has declined 25% since 1990. Still, 1.2 million U.S. abortions occur yearly. The slippery slope (abortion to infanticide) surfaces again in the recent trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell. “Gosnell wasn’t only charged with performing illegal late term abortions, he was charged with delivering viable babies and then killing them. It’s no wonder the main stream media didn’t want to talk about it.” (Jonah Goldberg) Need crisis pregnancy help? Catholic Charities is there for you. To abort a child is to kill someone who cannot defend himself. ~Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, former Archbishop of Buenos Aires (now Pope Francis), Sobre el cielo y la tierra (On heaven and earth), 2011. We must never tire of clarifying misunderstanding and shedding light where there is myth and confusion, demonstrating empathy and compassion and a deeper vision...Our task is to present the truth with civility, empathy and clarity. Being champions of the Gospel of Life is about building a civilization of love. ~Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, O.F.M. The Catholic Church is founded on the Corporal Works of Mercy and helping others. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has always advocated for health care. The Catholic Church is opposing the health care mandate, because it violates the First Amendment, which is supposed to safeguard freedom of religion. To voice your opposition to the federal health care mandate, contact the White House at: www.whitehouse.gov/contact or call: 202-456-1111 or 202-456-1414; or write to: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500. Let the White House know that the mandate violates the First Amendment, which guarantees religious freedom. Page Seven The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ PRAY for our ACTIVE MILITARY Have you seen the St. Patrick Prayer Board for active military personnel who are fighting on the front lines for our freedom? We post the pictures and rank of relatives of our parish family members and ask that you remember them in daily prayer. Since there are many new deployments, please let us know if there are any family members you would like posted...and may God keep them safe. “Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
