The top three spellers from each 3rd, 4th and 5th grade class will be invited to participate. Between October 27 and 31 each classroom will hold its own spelling bee to determine its top three spellers. Although 1st and 2nd graders are not eligible to participate in the November 12 spelling bee, they will have the opportunity to participate in their classroom bees. We follow the Scripps National Spelling Bee rules, and teachers will be sending home the official practice lists soon. It's not too late to join the PTA! Dues are $10 per person, and there are membership envelopes in the office. PTA Information Red Ribbon Week The PTA thanks all the parents, teachers and staff members that volunteered to make this year's jog a thon a success. We will be having spirit days all week as follows: The PTA would like to extend a huge thank you to Kristin Ceasri for organizing the Harvest Festival again this year. Countless hours go into this event. Hundreds of students turned out for this year's Harvest Festival and a great time was had by all! Thank you to everyone that volunteered or donated an item for the cake walk. A special thank you to Kristin and Todd Ceasri, Haifa Brunelli, Heather and Jason Pagan, KK Bray, Michael Crone, Kate Thome, Alicia McDonald, Joy Gibson, Angie Owen and Susan Tate. The book fair will be held November 17-21, the week of parent-teacher conferences. The book fair is not possible without parent volunteers. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Sarah at [email protected]. SACMATH Contest Sacramento Area Competitions in Mathematics would like to invite students to attend a math contest. For more information visit the SACMATH website at www.sacmath.com. Palladio Rewards Program Russell Ranch is participating in the Palladio Rewards program. As of 10/14, we are in 5th place out of 13 schools with $40,677 in receipts submitted. The schools that end in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places as of May 2015 will receive $2,500, $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000. We can easily move up to 1st place and receive the $2500 award in May of 2015 Thank you to all who entered the receipts. The PTA will be putting a drop box in the front office where you can drop your receipts to assist in entering them online. Attention Russell Ranch Families …Clarification about student(s) arrival on campus in the AM: In the past, students have been instructed to go straight to the multi upon arrival and wait patiently until the bell rings and then walk to class. We are finding that the multi space is limited and a little crowded on an everyday basis and will be implementing small changes. Starting MONDAY, OCTOBER 20, please have the students drop their backpacks off at the classroom and proceed directly to the playground. When the first bell rings @ 8:20 am, they are to walk quietly and carefully to their classroom. (Supervision will be on the playground 8:00 am – 8:25 am.) Please note - There will be no access to equipment and students will not be allowed on the grass before school. Students are to be on the blacktop only. Please help your students understand this process and also know they are not to be “hanging out” in the hallways or amphitheater. All students should be on the blacktop only if arriving before school starts. *** During rainy days or inclement weather, please have students report to the multi (with their belongings) and then proceed to class when the bell rings. *** Thank you for your help and support in advance. History Day National History Day is a research-oriented competition open to middle school and high school students. California encourages 4th and 5th graders to participate in the same competition at the state level to get younger students interested in history. This year's History Day theme is Leadership and Legacy. Not only is it a perfect theme for younger students to sink their teeth into, but this year's State History Day competition will be held in Sacramento! Ms. Golden is the Russell Ranch History Day coach/advisor. She will hold a series of Friday, after-school workshop sessions to help students who would like to compete in the District and Sacramento County competitions which lead up to the state-wide event. Interested parents are also welcome to attend these sessions which will be held from 2:45-3:30. Fri, 10/24: What does the competition involve? Choosing a topic and starting your research. Fri, 11/7: Evaluating primary and secondary sources. Keeping track of your sources. Fri, 11/14: Project examples - how to organize your project Fri, 12/12: How is the research coming along? Fri, 1/9: Poster support Fri, 1/16: (tentative) Poster presentation dry runs Mon, 1/26: District History Day (required in order to advance to the Sac County HD) Meet the Machines Logo Contest Cordova Recreation and Park District (CRPD) is seeking the talents and artistic abilities of local youth to come up with a logo for the 2015 Meet the Machines event! If you are interested in entering this contest, applications are available in the office.
