For this is the will of my Father,
that everyone who sees the Son
and believes in him may have eternal life,
and I shall raise him on the last day.・
This weekend we celebrate THE COMMEMORATION ALL THE
FAITHFUL DEPARTED (ALL SOULS). The feast has its roots in
the Sixth Century, where Benedictine monks had the tradition of
praying to the dead as a way of recognizing the human bonds
which go beyond death. By the Tenth Century this feast was about
praying for the dead, that they might know the merciful love of God.
Today the Feast is a way for us to think about what a soul is. In our
modern culture which has become more and more secular, the use
of the word “soul” has become more and more common. For example, the use of it to define a certain kind of culture and their music
(Soul Food and Music). Many non-religious persons will use this
very religious word to describe a person who is lonely or distressed. For example; “lost souls” or in a more positive way to describe a person as a “beautiful soul”. Still others may use it to describe how something affected them, “that music or piece of art
touched my soul”. Then there is the real common use to alert others of distress by an SOS which the acronym for “Save Our souls”.
Put all these uses together and I believe it reinforces the teaching
of St. Thomas Aquinas who taught that the “soul is the very thing
that makes as human and sets us apart from all other animals.
Nearly all the great religions of the world join in our belief in a soul,
and that it is the soul that remains after death of the body. Fr. Richard Leonard, sj, says that “whatever else might characterize the
soul, memory is an integral part it”. After all, do we not say this in
each of the Eucharistic Prayers after the consecration, “Do this in
memory of me.”!
In my ministry I have presided over countless funeral services;
those of infants as well as a person who lived to the age of 106. All
have left their loved ones memories. Each of their memories is
important because as we remember our loved ones they are truly
present to us. For me it is their memory that eases the pain of their
death.
In the past two months I have lost to death four good friends, Dick,
a member of my Breakfast Club, John a dear friend of 25 years
who joined his wife in heaven, our Bishop Cirilo Flores and just two
weeks ago of friend of 40 years Msgr. Fred Florek. I miss each of
them immensely for each has touched my life and I am better because of them and am grateful to God for having placed them in
my life. A day does not go by that I do not take time to remember
them as I do my parents and all my loved ones who have died. It is
perhaps one of my most peaceful times of my day.
The feast of the Commemoration of the All Faithful Departed (All
Souls) is the church’s way of saying that all the dead are never
forgotten and thus are never truly dead! In the Funeral Preface of
the Mass it says: Indeed for your faithful, Lord, life is changed not
ended, and, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal
dwelling is made ready for them in heaven.
Thus THE COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED is not a sad occasion but one of gratitude where we give thanks
to our Lord for the gift of our loved one who has died and at the
same time we are reunited with them in our remembering.
Feast of Saint Charles Borromeo-November 4
Saint Charles Borromeo was born of a wealthy
Italian family and was the nephew of Pope Pius
IV. At the age of twenty two, he was summoned to
Rome and made cardinal and administrator of the
Papal States and the archdiocese of Milan. Despite his personal wealth, St Charles lived a simple, ascetic life and was a strong supporter of
church reform. In 1564 he was ordained a priest and consecrated
as bishop. He founded seminaries and instituted the teaching of
doctrine to children in Sunday schools. Never one to ask of another
something he was not prepared to do himself, St Charles worked
tirelessly to help those in need, particularly during the plague and
famine in 1576 ad. He is the patron saint of Catechists, Catechumens and Seminarians. © Creative Ministry Resources 2005
On the Lighter Side
A man died and went to the pearly gates. St. Peter met him there.
"Before you meet with God," St. Peter said, "I thought I should tell
you that we've looked at your life, and you really didn't do anything
particularly good or bad. We're not at all sure what to do with you.
Can you tell us anything you did that can help us make a decision?"
The newly arrived soul thought for a moment and replied, "Yeah,
once I was driving along and came upon a woman who was being
harassed by a group of bikers. So I pulled over, got out my tire iron,
and went up to the leader of the bikers. He was a big, muscular,
hairy guy with tattoos all over his body and a ring pierced through
his nose. Well, I tore the nose ring out of his nose, and told him he
and his gang had better stop bothering the woman or they would
have to deal with me!" "I'm very impressed," St. Peter responded,
"When did this happen?" "About two minutes ago!"
All Souls Novena
If you wish to have your loved one(s) remembered in the Novena of
Masses for the month of November it is not too late. Just use the
enrollment envelope in your monthly packet or you may pick one
up in the main entrance of the church and return it next week in the
collection or drop it off at the Parish Office during the week.
Have a great week and I pray that our Lord continue to bless you
abundantly with his love and for the protection of our patron, Peter
the Apostle.
Every parting gives a foretaste of death
Every reunion a hint of resurrection.

MAKING
Did you know that St. Ignatius of Loyola had a notorious
police record for nighttime brawling with intent to inflict serious harm? Or that St. Hedwig, a wealthy duchess, was
called the “Barefoot Duchess” because she would give
away her own shoes (and walk barefoot) when meeting
someone too poor to own shoes? The Feast of All Saints is
Saturday, November 1st. In preparation for this day, children in Faith Formation classes have been learning fun and
interesting facts about some very well- known and not so
well-known saints.
Join us. In the school library on Sunday, November 2nd at
10:00am for a presentation of the Saints by our Catechists
and Students. Family members are welcome. Light refreshments will be served afterwards on the patio. The days
and weeks leading up to All Saints Day offer all of us an
opportunity to study holy men and women, to learn about
their struggles and their joys, and, to discover that we, too,
are called to be Christ for others.
There will be no CFF Class on November 9th.

hemos visto tu vida, y realmente no hiciste nada particularmente
bueno o malo. No estamos seguros que hacer contigo. ¿Puedes
No pasa

STEWARDSHIP CORNER
All Souls Day on Nov. 2 is a day
when we pray for deceased souls.
These prayers may be general in
nature or they may involve specific
members of our families and our
faith communities, including perhaps physically visiting the graves
of our family members.
On All Saints Day, we acknowledge the presence of
those who have departed this life. Today, we recognize and honor them to an even greater extent. To
practice stewardship completely we need to be aware
of our personal families and our faith families. Just
prior to today’s Gospel reading Jesus reminds us that
“I am the bread of life.” Seven times in Holy Scripture,
Jesus states, “I am…” followed by various statements
which allow us to grasp more fully what He is and
what He has done for us.
Bread is considered one of those essentials “for life.”
Jesus is reminding us that He is essential for life, for
eternal life. Jesus is not speaking of the physical life
on this earth, but about “eternal life.” It is that hope
which allows us to trust in Him by living stewardship.
This past June at Mass, Pope Francis said, “He Himself is the living bread that gives life to the world.” Let
us embrace that hope.
