The tale of the magi from the East is one of the most fascinating in all of scripture. It has much to teach us about what we can come to expect, even in circumstances and places that may seem insignificant or small. Bethlehem was a tiny town, what we might refer to today as a town without even one stop light. Yet it is over this seemingly insignificant place that the guiding star stops in its own search for the place where the Savior would be born. Too often we fail to recognize the fact that the star of Bethlehem comes to rest in our everyday lives, where we can experience God’s presence, manifested in ever new ways. Epiphany calls us to shake off our stupor and recognize the One who comes to save us. El desarrollo del relato de la Encarnación continúa hoy cuando la Iglesia celebra la Epifanía. La Epifanía nos llama a salir de nuestro estupor y a reconocer a Aquél que viene a salvarnos. Overcoming Anxiety by Diane M. Houdek Have you ever noticed that anxiety is contagious? If someone you know is worried about something, suddenly a free-floating anxiety seems to attach itself to you as well. We begin to imagine the terrible things that might happen. The more we have to lose, the more anxious we become. Once we let fear and anxiety take over, we have difficulty getting out of their tangled net. And we spread our fears to the people around us in hopes of finding not a way out, but a confirmation of our anxiety. Often we fall prey to anxiety because of our own fears and insecurities, but in the moment it seems the threat is somehow outside of us. In today’s Gospel, Matthew tells us that the magi came to Jerusalem and asked where the newborn king could be found. The response was surely not what they expected: “When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.” Their natural expectations were met with confusion, suspicion and subterfuge. King Herod, threatened by the idea of a new ruler supplanting him, subverted the work of his own scholars and wise men to find out the answer to the magi’s question, but for his own purpose. Consumed with his own power and control, he is not willing to let another usurp his throne. His advisors must have quickly realized that their own careers and even their lives, were subject to his wrath. We don’t know for sure whether these visitors were kings, wise men, astrologers, astronomers or philosophers. What we do know is that they were seekers. Fortunately the magi were outside Herod’s influence and unaffected by his anxiety. They knew the signs they had seen and they knew what they sought. They heard the words of the sages and Torah scholars as simple directions, confirmation of their own vision. And they continued on their journey. They arrived in Bethlehem, worshiped the child and presented him with symbolic gifts: gold for kingship, frankincense for divinity, myrrh for the death that he would both endure and conquer. But the magi refused to be part of his scheming. There seems to be a two-part lesson here for us. The first is that trust can be more powerful than anxiety. If we’re naturally anxious people, such trust won’t come easily. Prayer can help. We need to strengthen our faith so that we don’t give in to the sorts of fears and anxieties that seem rampant in the world around us. The second part is that at some point we have to let go of an unreasonable responsibility for the anxieties of others. We simply can’t control what people will do. We can do our best to calm them, but they will need to learn trust for themselves. Like the magi, we need to be willing to take a risk, to look for something new and to let ourselves be changed by the experience. PRAYER Dearest Jesus, I have no myrrh, but I can offer My laughter and joy to your sad ones. I have no frankincense, but I can bring the aroma of hospitality to the lonely. I have no gold, But I can bring my service to the church. Take my gifts, take my heart. Amen. OLL Ministry to Military Families (MMF) Launches Major Project OLL’s MMF has been working with LA City and our own Councilman Krikorian to show our support for the military members of our families (immediate and extended) who are defending us here and abroad. This project is the first of its kind anywhere in LA and OLL is leading the way. The Project involves the City placing 3’ x 8’ banners on the light poles along Foothill Blvd in our Sunland/Tujunga community that identify a military loved one and who is supporting them. Page Three What’s Happening Chili Sunday Coming It is NOT too early to be thinking about Super Bowl Sunday AND what you will serve those famished sports enthusiasts gathered to celebrate. The Religious Education (RE) Ministry is continuing their now six-year tradition of making Chili for Super Bowl Sunday — this year it’s February 6th. Please support this fundraiser — their ONLY fundraiser for 2010-2011 — by purchasing their delicious Chili. Details will be forthcoming in future bulletins concerning how to preorder your delicious Chili Bowls. CDA to Hold Baby Shower On January 23, 2011, the Catholic Daughters will sponsor a Baby Shower. Donated items will benefit the Pregnancy Counseling Center in Mission Hills. The Center offers counseling for crisis pregnancies, abortion alternatives, referrals, post abortion counseling and material assistance. Recently, the Center acquired an ultrasound machine so mothers can see their unborn babies growing peacefully within them. The Pregnancy Counseling Center is requesting cribs, bassinettes, large diapers, socks, baby wipes, baby lotions (no shampoo or powders), bottles, and boys’ clothes up to 18 months. Please no toys or stuffed animals. Car seats must be new and still in the box. If you would like to write a check, please make it out to the Catholic Daughters: CDA Court 1507. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The date we know as January 6 was established as the solstice in Egypt in 1996 BC, but the Egyptian calendar lost a full day every 128 years. Twenty centuries later the actual solstice had migrated to December 25. People still kept January 6 for the solstice celebration, but December 25, matching nicely with the Roman pagan feast of the Unconquered Sun, launched an extended solstice holiday. By the time of the early church, the whole period of twelve days was celebrated just about everywhere. Christians began to celebrate Christ as the true light of the world in four themes: the Nativity, the manifestation to the Gentiles, the baptism of the Lord, and the wedding feast at Cana. That was entirely too much for one day to handle. A twelve-day season was ready to be adapted, so Christians borrowed from the pagan calendar for their own season of light. Thus early Christian celebrations of the Christmas season extended from one date for the solstice, December 25, to the older date, January 6. The darkest time in the Northern Hemisphere could now be filled with the Christian observance of the arrival of the Light of the World. San Andrés Bessette. 6 de Enero El Hermano Andrés fue un religioso canadiense, perteneciente a la Congregación de la Santa Cruz (n. Quebec, 9 de noviembre de 1845 - m. Montreal, 6 de enero de 1937), su nombre real fue Alfred André Bessette. Hijo de una familia humilde y profundamente religiosa de diez hijos. A los veinte años se fue a los Estados Unidos, donde ingresó a la Congregación San Andrés de la Santa Cruz en 1863 e hizo sus votos religiosos como hermano lego en 1866. Se destacó no solo por su humildad, sino también por ser visionario (se le apareció San José en 1900), místico y taumaturgo (tenía el don de sanar enfermos). Fue portero del colegio Notre Dame, y fue el gestor de la construcción de la Basílica-Oratorio de San José, en 1904 y en la cual actualmente descansan sus restos. Murió en Montreal, el 6 de enero de 1937, a la edad de 92 años. January 2, 2011 Las Hijas Católicas de América Tendrán un Baby Shower El 23 de Enero, 2011, las hijas catolicas de america patrocinaran una lluvia de regalos (Baby Shower). Los articulos donados beneficiaran el centro de consejería de embarazos de misión hills. El Centro ofrece consejería a las madres para lo siguiente: embarazos en crisis, alternativas al aborto, referencias, consejería y material de asistencia después de un aborto. Recientemente el centro adquirió equipo de ultrasonido para que las madres puedan ver el proceso del crecimiento pacifico de los bebitos que están en el seno materno. El Centro de Consejeria de Embarazos necesita cunas, cunitas de mimbre sin pedestal, pañales desechables de tamaño grande, calcetines, toallitas humedas desechables para bebitos, loción para bebitos (no champú o talco), biberones, y ropa para varoncitos (tallas de recién nacido hasta los 18 meses). Por favor no donen juguetes o peluches. Los asientos para carros tienen que ser nuevos y venir en su caja. Tradiciones La tradición situaba el Nacimiento de Jesús en el solsticio de invierno; y desde el siglo II se celebraba en los primeros días de enero la Teofanía, fiesta de la manifestación del Salvador, en la que se agrupaban su nacimiento, su bautismo y su adoración por los Magos. Puesto que unos días antes, el 25 de diciembre, los paganos celebraban el “Natalis Invicti” (Nacimiento del Invicto, que era el Sol), la Iglesia desglosó la Teofanía (actual fiesta de la Epifanía), la conmemoración del Nacimiento, fijándola en el 25 de diciembre, con el propósito de que el “Nacimiento del Invicto” pagano cobrara su sentido pleno al significar el Nacimiento del único Invicto, Jesús.
