NAVARRO BOOK OF REVELATION, PART 1 TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 7:29 P.M., AE-102-103 One of the most significant books of the New Testament is greatly neglected as many Christians dismiss it as totally unintelligible. Join us as we grapple and probe this magnificent inspired literature and its very profound message to us today. ABCD YEAR COMING TO AN END St. John Neumann parishioners have almost completed our 2014 ABCD pledge goal of $256,135.00. We are, as of the end of October, $35,846.00 short of our pledged amount. If you have not yet completed your pledge, please know that it is not too late to do so. Thank you for your continued generosity and your efforts for the neediest in our community. Our bins will be located outside of the church before and after Mass. Through our efforts each homeless person will receive brand new sweatpants, new underwear, new socks and a new blanket. Please note the size and item described on your angel. *We do not need t-shirts or sweatshirts because the Homeless Ministry will provide them with a special t-shirt funded through the Pennies from Heaven collection.* Forgot to pick up an angel? No problem…we need size large the most. Thank you for your help. For more information, please call Amanda La Gra at 305-936-6281 or e-mail us at [email protected]. NEW PARISHIONERS...ARE WELCOMED AT ST. JOHN’S. If you want to join our Parish Family, please attend one of our orientation meetings which are held one Sunday a month at 9:30 a.m., Rooms E&F. For dates please call the Parish Office or speak to someone at the Information Booth in the Loggia after Masses on Sundays. Everyone interested in joining is welcome to the meeting! We have coffee, donuts and juice for the little ones - and you will be out in time for the 11:00 a.m. Mass. CURRENT PARISHIONERS, please inform us of any name, address or phone changes; this will assist in keeping your records up to date. Thank You!! Page 3 November 9, 2014 PASTOR’S REFLECTION Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome November 9, 2014 Dear Friends, This Feast reminds us that part of our faith is that the Church is the temple in which God’s Spirit dwells. The celebration of this Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is a challenge to love our fellow Catholics as those who, along with us, are the stones that are being built into that living temple. The stones of the Temple are bound together by a love that we live not just inwardly, but also in the outward forms. Church buildings, institutions, ecclesiastical offices... that make visible our bonds of unity. It is this unity that we are called to celebrate today. *When I hear the word “church”, do I think first of a building or of a community of people? After this there is nothing more but heaven itself.” St. Peter Julian Eymard *Is there a religious structure that has been particularly significant for me? As you reflect on God’s Word, may He strengthen you with His peace. May the good Lord bless you and your dear family abundantly each day. Please pray for me. In Christ, Msgr. Pablo A. Come Experience the Most Memorable Night in History... Come Experience "THE GIFT" ...Coming December 21 & 22 to SJN NEW TIME FOR SUNDAY TV MASS The Heart of the Nation Sunday TV Mass for the homebound in Miami has moved to 9:00 a.m. on WPXM (ION) channel 35. Does someone you love depend on the TV Mass because of age, illness, or other struggles? Please spread the word about the TV Mass. (For the faithful who can get to church, TV Mass does not meet the weekend Mass obligation.) SAMUEL VOCATIONS MINISTRY A study commissioned by the Knights of Columbus revealed that 75% of young people who had seriously considered religious life felt they were never encouraged to pursue that goal. Do you know someone who would make a good priest or religious? Why not tell him/her so? Your encouragement may be all he/she needs. PLEASE PRAY FOR VOCATIONS Page 4 November 9, 2014 A MINUTE IN THE CHURCH; ONE MINUTE CATHOLIC APOLOGETICS Apologetics- the branch of theology concerned with the defense and rational justification of Christianity (in our case, Catholicism). Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks for a reason for your hope. 1 Peter 3:15 PURGATORY A family was having Thanksgiving dinner. They took out their finest china, and their finest china and their most prized possession, for the feast. After a long and delicious meal, their fine china was full of gunk. Rather than put the china directly into the china hutch, the most beautiful place imaginable where it would stay forever, they put it into the sink and lovingly washed off the gunk. This little parable may be a good way for us to understand Purgatory. You see, you are that fine china… God’s most precious possession. The table represents our lives on earth, where we accumulate a lot of gunk. And the beautiful china hutch represents heaven, where we will live forever. The Catechism tells us that Purgatory is not so much a place as a process, the “final purification of the elect.” The Book of Revelation 21:27 says that nothing unclean will enter heaven. So think of Purgatory as the sink, where God lovingly washes us clean, so that we can take our place with all those who have gone in faith before us. PRAYER FOR PROTECTION AGAINST STORMS God Our Father You set the earth on its foundation. Keep us safe from the danger of hurricanes and storms and let us always feel the presence of Your love. May we be secure in Your protection and serve You with grateful hearts. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen. Oh Mary conceived without sin, Pray for us who have recourse to you. Catholic Parish of St. John Neumann HOMELESS MINISTRY MEMBERS: Please note changes for this month: Our next outing will be on Saturday, November 15 only, not Sunday, November 16. We are expecting to feed 700 homeless men, women, AND children. Parishioners are asked to donate cans of soda, individual bottles of water, or individually wrapped sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs, snacks, and individually wrapped desserts. Please drop off your donations at the church pavilion no later than 1:00 p.m. Volunteers will be making Thanksgiving entrees, so we will not need soup or hot food items this month. Due to limited space at Miami Rescue Mission, volunteers for this outing have already been pre-approved. Please note** All approved volunteers must arrive at the St. John Neumann pavilion no later than 1:00 p.m. to pick up their MRM volunteer badge. Volunteers without a badge will not be permitted into the facility by the MRM staff. The group will depart promptly at 2:00 p.m. For more info, please contact Amanda La Gra at 305-936-6281 or contact Alicia Speight at [email protected]. Also, we will continue to collect items for the Christmas angels this weekend and next weekend. Please donate new men’s underwear, sweat pants, or white socks. Size Large is needed the most. Thank you for your generosity. Going on vacation? Bring us your travel-size toiletry items from the hotels. They are the perfect size for the homeless. Page 5 November 9, 2014 JUSTICE CORNER NOVEMBER 9, 2014 Caring for God’s Temples Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit built on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ. St. Paul urges us, “…each one must be careful how he builds upon it…” We build carefully by taking care of ourselves and choosing carefully what we allow into our bodies through our ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and limbs. St. Paul reminds us that we also need to take care of others. “If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person…” Since 1969 the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), has sought to build up the people of God by empowering them to challenge unjust structures that create poverty. People Acting for Community Together, a CCHD-funded group in Miami, works to break the school-to-prison pipeline by reducing out-of school suspensions for minor disciplinary infractions. Education is an effective means of ensuring that people can care for their temples of the Holy Spirit. You can learn more about the work of CCHD at www.povertyusa.org ST.
