It demonstrates the ability to describe a familiar topic and to make comparisons. The sample shows a sound understanding of simple tense and sentence structure. There is evidence of L1 interference. Stage 1 Grade descriptions Familiar content with some examples to provide support for ideas; a mixture of copying from source materials or reproduction of formulaic expressions and the student’s own attempts at writing. A basic awareness of genre and attempts to plan work. Use of common verbs in simple tenses, sound simple sentence patterns, correct simple punctuation, and correct spelling of most commonly used words; correct use of basic cohesive ties and contractions. The student supports ideas and statements with detail in almost every case. The student does attempt to order information seen by the use of ‘first’ which is not followed through. Compare contrast constructs are also used but the writing exhibits a lack of planning and knowledge of how to construct paragraphs. The student demonstrates consistent use of basic punctuation such as capital letters, full stops and commas. Most words are correctly spelt and the use of basic cohesive ties is sound. The writing exhibits a variety of verbs used correctly in the simple tenses. The writing exhibits some lack of clarity mostly due to experimentation with unfamiliar and original lexical choices. The vocabulary is, at times, repetitive but the word choice is generally correct (although sometimes used in the incorrect form).
