PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Small is best
Small Class sizes at Bright P12 College
This year, the College with College Council guidance has resourced smaller class
sizes from Prep to Year 12 at Bright P12
College, a significant achievement, given
how tight funding for education is presently. There has been much debate
around the impact class size has on
student achievement with some studies
suggesting class size has little to no impact. The Grattan Institute’s Dr Ben Jensen has recently revived this argument.
And many politicians and those who
want to reduce public school funding
seem to agree. But the evidence, it turns
out, tells quite a different story. Many
educators point out that these studies
do not examine class size directly but
rather a proxy measure presumed to
represent it – student-teacher ratio.
Mixed up evidence
While group size and ratio are related,
they involve different assumptions about
how investment changes opportunities
for students and teachers. Class size
directs attention to the learning environment while pupil ratio is typically an economic category illustrating the amount
of money spent.
There is a growing body of research on
how much class size matters to
children’s attainment. Peter Blatchford, a
researcher at the UCL Institute of
Education, notes that the issue comes
round regularly, with the debate
frequently intense and sometimes angry.
One reason that some parents send their
children to private schools is because
they supposedly have smaller classes
resulting in more individualised teaching
and a better working environment – or
so the
argument goes. However as
we are aware not all private schools are
prioritising smaller class sizes in their
schools. (reference made to the website

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT
Gala Day
Sally Cocks and Kylie Wickham have been busy planning for
the GALA Day float. I would strongly encourage any parent or
grand-parent who would love to be a part of this to contact
Sally at the College in the office. Many hands make light work.
Thanks ladies for taking this on.
Second-hand Uniform Supplies
Thank you to everyone who has answered my call of bringing
in good quality second-hand uniform. I am still chasing more
second-hand uniform items for all seasons. Thank you also to
the people who have donated “new” school shoes and other
new items.
Uniform

to zone swimming sports, which are
being held this week.
Deb Ball for Year 11
Jean and I are looking for parents, Parents and Friends group
members and community members who are interested in
joining our Deb Ball Sub-Committee. We will be looking for a
team to help with planning and preparation and also the
design of the evening. Thank you to the parents who have
already committed to the team and we welcome you on
board. Our first meeting will be held towards the end of the
term and then we aim to meet on a regular basis.
A reminder that the uniform shop has received new stock.
Boys need to be reminded that the grey 720 shorts are
available and for the girls the blue tailored shorts are also
available. Currently we have some students wearing the
incorrect shorts to school on a regular basis. If there is an issue with a particular student or uniform item I would
encourage you to give me a call. All students who are out of
school uniform require a note from their parents explaining
Kelli Jacobsen
the reason for incorrect uniform.
School-books and resources
It is imperative that students have all of the required
materials and books for class and this includes a netbook or
computer. Please remember that the College is able to
provide some assistance if required or please come and see
me.
Swimming Sports
Congratulations to all of the students who competed at the
primary and secondary swimming sports this week. It was
wonderful to see so many students competing and actively
participating in this event. Thank you to the staff and parents
who supported this event; without your support, students
would not be unable to participate in events that are run so
successfully. Thank you also to Matt Pywell and Teagan
Nugent who were the organisers for the days. Good luck to all

School procedures for the bushfire season
Fire danger ratings and warnings are used in Victoria to provide clear direction on the safest options for preserving life.
Schools and children’s services listed on the DEECD Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR) will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating
day is determined in their Bureau of Meteorology district. Our school has been identified as being one of those at high bushfire
risk and is listed on the BARR.
Where possible, we will provide parents with up to four days notice of a potential Code Red day closure by letter. A Code Red day will
be determined by the Emergency Management Commissioner no later than 1.00 pm the day before the potential closure. Once we are
advised of the confirmation of the Code Red day we will provide you with advice before the end of the school day.
Once confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of improvements in the weather forecast. This is to
avoid confusion and help your family plan alternative care arrangements for your child. It is also important to note that:

No staff will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Code Red day.

Out-of-school-hours care will also be cancelled on these days

School camps will be cancelled if a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined for the Bureau of Meteorology district in which
the camp is located.

As a bus co-ordinating school, all our bus routes will be cancelled.
On these Code Red days families are encouraged to enact their Bushfire Survival Plan – on such days children should never be left at
home alone or in the care of older children.
For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the CFA advise that when Code Red days are forecast, the safest option is to leave the
night before or early on the morning of the Code Red day.
As part of preparing our school for potential hazards such as fire, we have updated and completed our Emergency Management Plan.
What can parents do?

Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan
is up-to-date and includes alternative care
arrangements in the event that our school is closed.

Ensure we have your current contact details,
including your mobile phone numbers.

You can access more information about children’s services closures on the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development website – see http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/health/pages/closures.aspx
For up-to-date information on this year’s fire season, visit the CFA website at www.cfa.vic.gov.au or call the 24-hour Victorian Bushfires

Parents & Friends Group
We need volunteers to help run one of the most successful P&F Fundraising
activities. Each month we request parents’ and students’ assistance with
serving or cooking at the stall. Sometimes we will need parents’ assistance
with towing the BBQ Trailer as well.
We allocate a Year Level to each of the monthly markets to try to share the load but help is appreciated from
anyone at any market.
We are also running a BBQ on Saturday 7 March at the Brighter Days Festival in the morning from 9am 1pm and evening 5pm -9pm of so are requesting volunteers to help while enjoying the music.
Next is Year 6 on Saturday 21 March.
Please come along and have some fun being part of the school community!
Please contact Wendy on 0438352164 or email [email protected]
Without your help we cannot raise much needed funds for the school.
PIE DRIVE!!! PIE DRIVE!!!
Parents & Friends are currently running a Heiner’s Pie Drive Fundraiser. Your child should have brought home
the order forms for family pies, small pie packs and lamingtons this week. These have also been included on
the following pages.
Please return your order forms and money
to the office by Wednesday 11th March.
Pies will be ready for collection on Friday 20 th March at 3pm.
If you cannot collect your pies on this day, you will need to
arrange for a friend to collect them for you.
Thank you for your involvement in this fundraiser. Every little

example of what they can do to look after their wellbeing.
The students seemed to really enjoy their relaxation time.
During the year I will be offering some wellbeing days for year
12 including simple massage, hand scrub/massage and
morning tea treats. The first of these will be on March 11th.
I have also offered to take lunchtime relaxation if there is
enough interest. Some tips I gave them are as follows.

MORE ABOUT COMPASS
Dear Parents and Guardians,
In the last Newsletter you may have seen an article about the new online teaching and learning
platform the school introduced called COMPASS. COMPASS will enable parents/guardians to
better monitor their child’s progress at school as well as to access important information about
upcoming events. COMPASS will also be used to replace the student diary so that homework and
important dates can be published directly to a child’s schedule (or timetable) by classroom
teachers. Importantly, parents/guardians will be able to see that schedule via their own COMPASS
account.
COMPASS has many tools which will be introduced gradually to staff, students and parents – some staff are already trialling its use in class
– for example, teachers can publish work for students to complete via COMPASS and add grades and comments for the work submitted by
students. In time, student results will be published there for parent access.
One of the main uses of COMPASS will be for communicating with students and parents - already some notices (called News Items) have
been sent via COMPASS. Notices are still being sent as hard copies for those families who do not have internet access at home.
Over the next few weeks, we aim to officially bring all Secondary Students onto COMPASS as well as introduce them to their Education
Department email. Secondary Students will then, over time, be able to read daily notices, check their timetables, read work set for them or
the class, access additional learning materials and more. The timeline for bringing Primary students to COMPASS has still to be determined.
In the very near future, we will be inviting parents and guardians to start using COMPASS – some parents and guardians who recently
received an email News Item about the Swimming Sport via COMPASS may have already been able to get onto COMPASS. With COMPASS,
parents and guardians will eventually be able to: check their child’s schedules, see what work their child has been set (if made available by
the teacher), read notices/news items and calendars and notify the college of future absences for their child.
COMPASS has many features and tools and it will take time for Teachers, Staff, Parents and Students to learn how to use them effectively.
The college will welcome feedback from all users but does ask that patience and understanding is shown as we gradually introduce the
tools and functionality. Please be aware, not all teachers will be using all the tools of COMPASS in the early days – some will choose to use
them more than others until they have been fully trained.
More information on COMPASS will follow and will be published to the Newsletter. Additionally, there are help pages and guides on the
COMPASS website (https://brightp12.vic.jdlf.com.au/) In the meantime, please email any questions you have to the college, addressed for
the attention of COMPASS LEADERS.

Our annual Year 9 camp to Apollo Bay will again be held during the last week of term. This a great, inexpensive experience for students
who will have the opportunity to gain basic understanding and competence in surfing, mountain bike riding, kayaking and snorkeling
activities that they may not otherwise be able to participate in.
The students are billeted with Year 9 students from Apollo Bay P-12 College, and often,
great friendships are forged over the course of the week. The camp
encourages co-operation and social interaction with the Apollo Bay students in activities
with both physical and mentally challenging aspects.
Paperwork for the camp will be handed out this week and any enquiries should
be directed to Rebecca Crawley on 57551166

MUSICAL NOTES
New SECONDARY Instrumental Students
For students in the secondary area the cost of lessons this year is free for learning the Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba,
Euphonium, Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet and for some Guitar students. The only costs involved will be for the purchase of
any required equipment. If you are hiring an instrument from the school this ends up costing each family $6.00 per week,
which is a bargain! Make the most of this great opportunity and contact Mr Campbell for further details.
DON’T BE SHY! IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MUSIC TALK TO MR CAMPBELL.
Drum Lessons- Rudi Katterl
Due to Ray Robertson leaving the Bright area, Rudi Katterl will now be teaching drums at Bright P-12 College.
He is in the process of calling parents and students with the details of when lessons will be occurring. If you are interested
in learning the drums please contact Mr Campbell at school.
Concert Band Sleepover
The Concert Band recently had a sleepover on the night of Friday the 20 th of February until Saturday the 21st
of February. The students played through lots of new music and enjoyed sleeping in rooms in the 1876 building. All the
students involved should be very proud of their efforts and should be proud of their improvement on their individual
instruments over the two days. I would like to thank several parents who helped over the two days. These included: Kath
Lock, Darin Lynch, Kellie Gray, Kylie Wickam, Ty Caling, Lili Korndorffer and Rachel Campbell. Thanks very much for all of
your efforts this weekend; it wouldn’t have been possible without your help.
Choirs
Just a reminder that the P-2 and the 3-6 Choir have started for 2015. The P-2 Choir will rehearse each Tuesday at
lunchtime. The 3-6 Choir will rehearse each Thursday lunchtime. Please encourage your child to get involved. There are
no costs involved and it is a great way for a young child to learn about being part of a musical ensemble. I would like to
have a commitment from the students involved in these groups for a full year. Please discuss this with your child if they
are or are planning to become involved.

Bright Netball Association AGM is to be held on Monday 16th of March at 7pm at the Star Hotel.
We are going to need a lot of help this year if netball is to run, as a few of our key volunteers from previous
years have stood down.
We will need:
Committee members
Team managers (for Inters)
Umpires x 4 every week for Inters (Year 4 plus) games
A Joey's (Year 2-3 beginner netballers) co-ordinator
If you are keen to help in any capacity please contact Mandy Ditcham
on 0419 417 741 prior to the AGM so we can get organised for the
year ahead.
Without some new volunteers to help us run netball this year it is a
very real possibility that netball is not going to run in 2015.
ALBURY-WODONGA MOUNTAIN BIKERS
A new and free MTB race series will run in 2015. With the generous support of the Albury-Wodonga Mountain
Bikers Club, this series for youths aged up to 16 years of age will be run for free. Seven races from March 28th to
October 31st will be run over a course at Range Road on Nail Can Hill Reserve. Each event will begin at 2:00pm on
a Saturday and will finish at approximately 3:00pm. To participate each rider must hold a current MTBA
Competition membership, which provides 24/7 cover on the bike, including personal accident and public liability.

A very exciting day was had by all the students, staff and parents at the Primary Swimming Sports on Friday 20 th February.
The event was held at the Myrtleford Swimming Pool and was a lovely hot day for the students to be in the pool! The day
was a great success and a full report of the activities will follow in the next Newsletter. However, a special mention to those
students who made it into the next round and went to Wangaratta on Tuesday 24 th February….Congratulations! We wish
them all the best!
