Fifth Sunday of Lent March 25, 2012 To Die is To Live We are concluding our Lenten journey and as time goes by, our final destination, seem clearer with every step we take: Easter. Throughout the previous days we have been invited to conversion, which is means by which we encounter Christ. In the Gospel for this fifth Sunday of Lent, our Lord speaks to us about the mystery of life and the secret of spiritual fecundity: "I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit". While for men the habitual order of concepts is life - death, in Jesus Christ it is the opposite: death - life. Man wants to bear fruit without dying, however, this is impossible. It is necessary for the grain of wheat to die, as it is necessary to lose life in order to live eternally. Jesus accepts to be the grain that dies beneath the soil of the Earth to give abundant fruit and it is in Him that two antagonistic realities join hands: death and fecundity. With His self-giving, Jesus teaches us the law of the grain of wheat, a law which not only applies to physical death, but rather indicates that the way towards true life happens inevitably through death, renouncing one's self and trusting in God wholeheartedly. The gospel also tells us that "the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified". Jesus uses the term 'hour' to indicate the definitive moment of His self-giving, the hour of the fulfillment of His mission, the hour of the universal redemption by His suffering. Jesus had this supreme hour of His life very present. He knew that He had come to this world precisely to fulfill this mission, but the human sensitivity of Jesus did not stop from experiencing a profound inner confusion in the tough critical moment of His passion; in spite of His messianic conscience. His exaltation on Earth was completed on the cross and this way He would fulfill His task of salvation. The hour of Jesus is also the hour of the new man. The suffering and glorification of Jesus bring the prophecy to fulfillment that Jeremiah speaks of in the first reading. The new covenant between God and humanity will be sealed with the blood of Christ and its stipulations will not be written on stone, nor will Moses be the one to communicate them to the people; it will be God Himself who will write them in the hearts of men and the Holy Spirit shall 'read' them clearly, in a personal and intelligible way, to all who wish to listen to what the new law contains, the law of the Spirit. The Cross, which at its moment was an instrument of torment and suffering is now an instrument for the glorification of Jesus and cause of our salvation. The new path inaugurated by the life and death of Jesus, has the meaning of the grain of wheat which if it does not die, it does not produce wheat. It is the way of fecundity; it is the way to gain life, by losing it. This is the itinerary of every Christian: through death we will reach life, through suffering to joy and through the cross to resurrection. Christ was the grain of wheat, that when dying, gave abundant fruit, the sun that agonizes at dusk and resurrects at dawn, the olive tree that overcomes the inclement winter, the light that overcomes the shadow and the love that defeats hatred. Lord, give us a new heart for a new covenant and renew within us the strength of Your Spirit, so that once transformed into your children we may live your law of love, joyful and renewed and thus others may be able to see the face of Christ reflected in us. Morir es Vivir Vamos concluyendo el camino cuaresmal y cada vez parece más claro el destino final de éste caminar: la Pascua. En los días previos se nos ha invitado a la conversión, que es camino para el encuentro con Cristo. En el Evangelio de éste quinto domingo de Cuaresma, nuestro Señor nos habla del misterio de la vida y del secreto de la fecundidad espiritual: “Yo les aseguro que si el grano de trigo, sembrado en la tierra, no muere, queda infecundo; pero si muere, producirá mucho fruto”. Mientras que para los hombres el orden habitual de los conceptos es vida - muerte, en Jesucristo es al contrario: muerte - vida. El hombre quiere fructificar sin morir, pero esto es imposible. Es necesario que el grano de trigo muera, como también es necesario perder la vida para vivir eternamente. Jesús acepta ser grano que muere bajo la tierra para dar fruto abundante y en El se dan la mano dos realidades antagónicas: la muerte y la fecundidad. Con su entrega, Jesús nos enseña la ley del grano de trigo, una ley que no solo se aplica a la muerte física, sino que indica más bien, que el camino hacia la verdadera vida pasa inevitablemente por la muerte, la renuncia a uno mismo y el abandono confiado en Dios. El Evangelio también nos dice que “ha llegado la hora de que el Hijo del hombre sea glorificado”. Jesús utiliza el término ‘hora’ para indicar el momento definitivo de su entrega, la hora del cumplimiento de su misión, la hora de la redención universal por el sufrimiento. Jesús tenía muy presente esta hora suprema de su vida, y sabia que había venido a la tierra precisamente a cumplir esta misión, pero a pesar de su conciencia mesiánica, la sensibilidad humana de Jesús no deja de experimentar una profunda turbación interior en el duro trance de su pasión; su exaltación sobre la tierra se realizara en la cruz y de esta manera llevara a plenitud su obra redentora. La hora de Jesús es también la hora del hombre nuevo. El sufrimiento y la glorificación de Jesús llevan a cumplimiento la profecía de Jeremías que nos presenta la primera lectura. La alianza nueva entre Dios y la humanidad estará sellada con la sangre de Cristo y cuyas estipulaciones no estarán escritas sobre piedra, ni será Moisés quien las comunique a los hombres; Dios mismo las escribirá en el corazón del hombre y el Espíritu Santo ‘leerá’ con claridad, de modo inteligible y personal, a todo el que quiera escuchar el contenido de la nueva ley, la ley del Espíritu. La cruz, que en su momento fue instrumento de suplicio y sufrimiento, es ahora instrumento de glorificación de Jesús y causa de nuestra salvación. El nuevo camino inaugurado por la vida y la muerte de Jesús, tiene el sentido del grano de trigo, que si no muere no produce espiga. Es el camino de la fecundidad; es el camino para ganar la vida, perdiéndola. Este es el itinerario de todo cristiano: por la muerte llegaremos a la vida, por el sufrimiento al gozo y por la cruz a la resurrección. Cristo fue el grano de trigo que al morir, da fruto abundante, el sol que agoniza en la tarde y resucita en el alba, el ramo de olivo que supera el invierno inclemente, la luz que vence la sombra y el amor que derrota el odio. Danos Señor un corazón nuevo para una alianza nueva y renuévanos por dentro con la fuerza de tu Espíritu, para que convertidos en hijos tuyos, vivamos tu ley de amor, alegres y renovados y así podrán los demás ver el rostro de Cristo reflejado en nosotros. Please pass by the parish office and we will sign you up as a volunteer worker or sell you the advance rides tickets, we will even receive the donations envelopes and/or any donated items you want to bring. Note; if you have your own envelopes, check in the month of May to use the festival envelope by putting it in the collection basket or bringing it to the office. The Ride Tickets are much more expensive during the festival days. If you buy them in advance at the parish office, a sheet of 15 tickets is only $10.00. THE SHRINES OF SOUTHERN ITALY PLUS ROME – JULY 7 – 16, 2012 Bishop Arthur Serratelli will be the spiritual director during a travel experience to include Shrines and sites throughout southern Italy. The Trip will conclude in Rome. During a 4-night stay in Sorrento, visits will be made to Capri, Pompeii, Naples, Pagani, Amalfi, Positano and Ravello, continuing via Avellino to stay in San Giovanni Rotundo for 2 nights before going to Rome.
