SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
CHRISTIAN FORMATION
WORSHIP
ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year Two: Focus on the Domestic Church –Marriage & Family
Jesus is encountered in daily life within the domestic church, so that the
Holy Spirit gently blows upon the faith of everyone in the family,
turning sparks to embers and embers to flame!
2nd Sunday of Lent
"Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone
with them." Peter, James, and John must have been in a bit of spiritual
shock. What a strange thing had just happened! They had witnessed
Jesus, their teacher and friend, start glowing in his "dazzling white"
clothes while engaging in conversation with two holy dead men. Then, a
voice from the sky declared that Jesus was God's son. This was not natural. It was supernatural. These three chosen apostles were given a
glimpse into the divine nature of their leader. They were shown something that no one else had a chance to see until after the Resurrection:
Jesus in all of his glory. But this vision was short-lived. It suddenly
disappeared and then Jesus instructed his friends to keep it quiet until
"the Son of Man had risen from the dead."
Perhaps we can relate in some small way to this Transfiguration experience. Perhaps there has been a time or two in our lives when we have
had a spiritual experience, when we experienced God's healing, felt his
mercy, or knew his presence was real. But then, maybe it went away.
For most of us, we don't spend the majority of our time "on the mountaintop" with these "dazzling" insights into who God is. Rather, we tend
to walk a journey that is shrouded by mystery and dependent upon faith.
At times, we may even second-guess the spiritual experiences of our
past once they have "disappeared." Possibly Peter, James, and John
wondered if it had all been a crazy illusion. But when the Resurrection
happened, they knew it was all for real. As we await the Resurrection
this Lent, may we have the faith to believe that Jesus really has touched
our lives and that he can lead us to eternal life.
Deacon Corner: (By Deacon Al)
Jesus’ ministry, even today, is to bring healing and wholeness. He continues it through the Church and through us. In the Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays for spiritual and physical healing, forgiveness of sins, and comfort for those who are suffering from
illness. We all need the healing of our minds, our memories and our
broken relationships. Jesus now uses counselors, doctors, friends or
even strangers in his healing ministry. It is good to identify with the
mother-in-law of Peter. We can ask for the ordinary healing we need in
our own lives. When we are healed, let us not forget to thank Jesus for
his goodness, mercy, and compassion. As Jesus turned toward us, let us
turn to serve others. Our own healing process is completed only when
we are ready to help others in their needs and to focus on things outside
us. Let us communicate with the sick through our cards, telephone calls
and emails. Let us exercise the healing power of Jesus by visiting the
sick and praying for their healing. Let us remember that we need the
Lord’s strength, not only to make ourselves and others well, but to make
ourselves and others whole.
Worship Corner: Prayer for unity and intercessions. The grateful
memory of God’s salvation leads us to make a bold petition, our main
petition at every Eucharist: We pray for unity. “Humbly we pray that,
partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one
by the Holy Spirit” (Eucharistic Prayer II). To this petition we add prayers for the bishop of Rome and for the bishop of the local Church; we
pray for the living and the dead and especially for ourselves, that
through the intercession of the saints we may one day arrive at that table
in heaven of which this table is only a hint and a taste. We look forward
to that glorious day and raise our voices with those of all the saints who
have gone before us as the priest raises the consecrated bread and wine
and offers a toast, a doxology, a prayer of glory to God in the name of
Christ: “Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever
and ever.” Our “Amen” to this prayer acclaims our assent and participation in the entire Eucharistic Prayer.
Believe Out Loud! Live Your Faith!
L.I.F.E.
The Church teaches us that two spiritual strands weave together to form
the fabric of the season of Lent. One strand and the most familiar, is the
repentant character of Lent. Through the penitential practices of prayer,
fasting, and almsgiving we spend these forty days in the desert of repentance, preparing for the celebration of Easter.
However, the primary strand is the Baptismal character of this holy
season. The unbaptized spend Lent in preparation for their baptism and
most of us, the already baptized, spend this time preparing to renew the
promises —the covenant— established when we were baptized.
The next L.I.F.E. session will help us with our preparation for the renewal of our baptismal covenant.

YOUTH
This week at EDGE/LIFETEEN was the second of a four part series on
the four marks of the Church, focusing on the mark of “Holy.” In our
discussion, we talked about the reality that the Church is holy, not because of her members, but because of Christ. We then talked about the
lives of the saints and other people we view as models of holiness today,
noting how they can be examples to us on our walk of faith. We discussed that God is the source of our holiness, and the closer we are to
God the more we are able to live out our call to holiness each day. Our
next EDGE/LIFETEEN session will be held this Monday, March 2,
from 6:30-8:30pm. Our topic: The Four Marks of the Church—

REFLEXIONES
