FROM THE PASTOR
Today the end has come upon us. Well, the end of the
Church’s calendar anyway. While we begin Advent next
Sunday (the Church’s new year) today we finish with a
bang. It is the Feast of Christ the King. We recall the Lordship of Jesus in Heaven and on Earth, over all things, visible
and invisible. It is he, the Word of God, the second person
of the Most Holy Trinity, who took on our humanity so that
we might take on his divinity.

In the gospel today we hear about Jesus mounting his throne
on earth: the cross. From the world’s perspective (and that
too of Satan no doubt) he appears today to be an abject failure. Crucified between two insurrectionists, crowned with
thorns, beaten and scourged, mocked and spat upon, he begins his reign. This does sound a little crazy, doesn’t it? It
does from a worldly point of view. From the cross he did
not threaten, he prayed, “Father, forgive them.” He did not
curse, instead he assured, “Today, you will be with me in
paradise.” He did not ask for pity nor self aggrandize, he
said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”

It is precisely through his perfect and humble sacrifice of
self that we are saved and he exalted. He bore our sins upon
himself and they were crucified with him. His cross became
the wooden key that opened the gates of Kingdom of
Heaven to those who love and follow him. Through his obedience he is seated at the right hand of the Father where he
reigns for all eternity. As Saint Peter tells us, by his wounds
we are healed. While it may have looked bleak on Good
Friday the glory of Easter Sunday outshines the scorn he
received and the punishments our evil deeds deserve.
Today, we mark the day of Christ’s victory over all of our
weaknesses and frailties. He desires each of us to be saved
and will provide us with everything necessary for our salvation. He was like us in all things except sin and through his
cross we can leave sin behind and be made a people who
share in his divine life. Unlike many who rule and govern in
the world today he wasn’t concerned with popularity polls,
getting reelected, or keeping his subjects in line. He came
down from Heaven, he lived for us and died for us that we
might have life. That’s the mark of a real king. That’s the
mark of the True King!

¿no?
cruz, no amenazo, oró, "Padre, perdónalos." Él no maldijo,
Él no
verdadero rey. Esa es la marca del verdadero Rey!
