We went down with him into the waters that symbolized our death, and then we rose up with him to new life. We follow Christ into the tomb, and we follow him into a resurrection like his. Our following at Baptism was sacramental, in sign and symbol. One day, we will follow him in the reality of our own death, and we will pass over with him to the fullness of life. Now, at the moment of our death, it is no longer in sign and symbol but rather in the realities they signify.
