Work sample Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles) Stage 2 Work sample: MDT_TEX_ST2_B1_kimono_1 Grades are allocated at the end of a unit or semester based on the rank order of students. Grades should not be allocated to individual assessments. Assessment type: Design Performance associated with Grade B, representing high achievement. Work sample summary This sample shows the development of the early sections of the design process for a kimono and obi belt. The student excerpt has gathered information about the client needs. This is followed by a number of short comments about the main design influences. Several simple drawings with brief notes are presented as concepts for both the kimono and obi belt. Simple drawings for the final designs of both garments are presented. A limited, very brief production plan is evident. Evaluation statements are presented for the design and production processes, followed by a final product evaluation. Stage 2 Grade descriptions Design Uses a clearly identifiable design process but requires guidance to devise and generate individual ideas and develop solutions for others. Documentation displays clear design progression, using concept sketches that are annotated with appropriate terminology, which show the development of several ideas. Evidence of investigation into design considerations: function, cost, safety, aesthetics, demand, environmental factors and ergonomics. Folio contains fully-developed, dimensioned working drawings including the use of 2D and 3D CAD where applicable in context. Provides an explanation of materials against the design considerations, a sequence of manufacture, an evaluation of project processes and the end product against the functional, aesthetic and ergonomic requirements of the design criteria. 2009/17559 PDF: 2010/4363 Grade evidence in work sample Outlines client’s needs and beliefs and records body measurements. Materials are researched (due to copyright restrictions the images are not provided in this work sample). Simple, rapid concept drawings with little notation are created to develop the gown, and separate drawings are use for the obi belt. Three short statements are provided as a final justification, and a production plan is developed. Short statements are presented and provide a limited evaluation of the issues with the production. The final evaluation is too brief. Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles): Stage 2 Grade B Work sample 1 Work sample Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles) Stage 2 Grades are allocated at the end of a unit or semester based on the rank order of students. Grades should not be allocated to individual assessments. Presents design requirements clearly set out in the “needs and beliefs” statement accompanied by body measurements and the details of a commercial pattern. Presents brief comments about aesthetics, colour, appearance and function. The characteristics of the chosen material are discussed based on client needs. Simple comments are made about the material’s texture and its fire safety. Some brief mention of historical and cultural influences are included. Very few comments are made about fabric patterns or colour combinations. Presents rapid concept sketches with simple notations. 2009/17559 Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles): Stage 2 Grade B Work sample 2 Work sample Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles) Stage 2 Grades are allocated at the end of a unit or semester based on the rank order of students. Grades should not be allocated to individual assessments. Displays the obi belt concept sketches without any notation. Provides a justification that compliments many of the comments in the client statement. Simple drawings illustrate the final concept for production. Some notation gives a limited description of features and embellishments. 2009/17559 Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles): Stage 2 Grade B Work sample 3 Work sample Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles) Stage 2 Grades are allocated at the end of a unit or semester based on the rank order of students. Grades should not be allocated to individual assessments. Uses a simple storyboard to display the design for the obi belt and material samples. The storyboard had no additional notes, description of the pattern or details of the design. Image removed due to copyright restrictions (Image of traditional Japanese silk print) Image removed due to copyright restrictions (Two images of traditional Japanese silk print) Provides a care label with limited instructions for the type of fibre, plus washing and ironing instructions. Presents a very brief production plan spanning a five week period. 2009/17559 Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles): Stage 2 Grade B Work sample 4 Work sample Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles) Stage 2 Grades are allocated at the end of a unit or semester based on the rank order of students. Grades should not be allocated to individual assessments. Refers to the ongoing evaluation of the production process, including a comment about the time needed. Statements do not critically evaluate the progress to date. Picks up errors in the length of the material and comments on the actions taken to resolve the problem, with reference to the time required. Provides a summary evaluation of the design process, however, with little reference to the elements of design or the needs of the client. Presents clear photographs of the front and back showing the kimono and obi belt. Produces brief comments on the pattern and colour without a detailed justification of the choice of pattern or materials. 2009/17559 Materials, Design and Technology (Textiles): Stage 2 Grade B Work sample 5
