A WORD FROM FATHER KELLY
We have heard a lot from Pope Francis about Marriage and Family. In fact, he has called
for an extraordinary synod of bishops to converse about these topics. Although marriage is a
reality with which we are all familiar, we seldom give it the thought that it deserves. Our
Catholic faith has a long tradi on of holding up marriage as the founda on and example for
societal living. The prophets, early on, began to use marriage as an image of God's love for his chosen people. Then,
with the incarna on of Jesus Christ, marriage also became an image of the rela onship of Jesus, the bridegroom, with
his Church, the bride.
Marriage is indeed a special sacrament worthy of thought and reflec on. Today, however, when nearly 50 percent
of all marriages end in divorce, including those between two Catholic persons, a renewed understanding of marriage is
needed. If marriage is to be for us an external expression of an inward reality, a sacrament, we must be open to growing in our understanding of it so that we might be er live it.
Rela onships are fragile and not every marriage is a good one. In fact, some marriages should never have taken
place and from their concep on were never a sacrament because of an invalid consent. The Church recognizes our
humanity and that we can make mistakes or we can lack what is necessary for giving consent. In such circumstances
the Church, through a process called an "annulment" may declare marital consent to have been invalid, thus freeing
one to enter into another marriage.
Because of the importance of marriage in our society, and because of the many misconcep ons and misunderstandings about "annulments", I will be offering an adult faith forma on mini-series of two one-hour presenta ons.
The first presenta on will look at the Church's defini on of marriage and what is expected to be a part of the marital
rela onship. With that founda on, the second presenta on will speak about what happens when the expected realies do not exist: the annulment.
The presenta on on marriage will take place on Wednesday, October 22 from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. In the church and
the second presenta on on annulments will be on Wednesday, October 29, also from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. In the church.

Our students are con nuing to do well and our older students are ge ng into their projects, reports in Social Studies
and a Science Fair Project which will take place in November.
If you happen to come into the school these days, you will
see wri ng pieces from our students displayed in the hallway. We are emphasizing wri ng skills this year. All of our
students do a great job with their wri ng assignments.
We have a fun and healthy event coming up on October
29th. Our school Jogathon will take place that a ernoon.
Please support this school fundraiser by pledging a certain
amount of money per lap or you can also give a flat dona on
to the school for this event. We appreciate your support on

Es para todos bien sabido que para Jesús una de las comparaciones más usuales y socorridas a la hora de hablar
del Reino y de la vida eterna es la figura del banquete nupcial. Parece que algo de lo que es esencial en un banquete
nupcial es también esencial en la idea que Jesús se hace
de lo que debe ser tanto este mundo nuestro como el
Reino de Dios. ¿Por qué? En el banquete nupcial se configuran dos instintos fundamentales del hombre: el instinto
de nutrición y el instinto sexual.
Mediante el banquete el hombre eleva su instinto meramente animal de comer (matar el hambre) a una categoría
espiritual y humana: hacer un banquete. El banquete, el
invitar a los amigos a comer en la propia casa representa
la comunión amistosa de los hombres entre sí, que gozan
juntos de la bondad de las cosas y de los alimentos y comparten la alegría, la intimidad, los acontecimientos felices.
En el banquete parece que la vida se reconcilia: de hostil y
dura se convierte en gozosa y pacífica, y por eso se alarga
y se saborea el banquete.
Las nupcias profundizan el sentido del banquete. Las nupcias no celebran el acto biológico de la simpatía sexual,
sino el acto humano de la mutua entrega en el amor. En
las nupcias se festeja la generosidad benevolente de la
existencia que se extasía en la experiencia del amor humano como fusión vigorosa entre instinto y espíritu, entre
materia y consciencia. El banquete nupcial nos puede
dejar entrever el cielo como un anticipo en lo mejor de la
tierra.
Y Jesús dice que el Reino de Dios se parece a un banquete de bodas. Y la proclamación de ese Reino -el anuncio del Evangelio- se parece a la invitación al banquete
nupcial. (..) En este mundo desquiciado por la angustia del
tener más a costa de que otros tengan menos
(precisamente lo contrario de lo que es un banquete) es
donde Jesús nos invita a hacer un banquete.

Como parroquia, el seguir los pasos y el trabajo de Cristo requiere poner nuestra propia manera de vivir en práctica. Esto significa
para nosotros que como comunidad Cristiana, todos deberíamos de llegar a ser presencias vivientes de Cristo los unos con los otros.
Y podemos manifestar esto concretamente a través del Ministerio de Hospitalidad. El deseo de llevar el amor y la compasión de
Cristo a todas las personas que buscan a Dios y su presencia en cada una de sus vidas, es lo que nos inspiró a crear este tan especial
Ministerio de Hospitalidad. Este ministerio encarna nuestro llamado convincente para la evangelización y discipulado dentro de
nuestra comunidad y entre nuestros hermanos y hermanas. "Todos son bienvenidos y deberían sentirse bienvenidos" es lo que nos
gustaría hacer partícipes a cada persona que entre a nuestra Iglesia. Nadie debería sentirse extraño o marginado. Más bien, ligado por
un mismo propósito de servir al Señor a través de su gente, nosotros, la comunidad de la Parroquia de St. James, queremos dejar una
huella duradera de que somos una comunidad de amor donde todos son bienvenidos y nos recibimos con los brazos abiertos unos con
otros.
Una parte integral de este ministerio de hospitalidad durante la Misa de fin de semana es de dar la bienvenida a las personas por medio de ayudarlos o encaminarlos en sus necesidades especiales antes de Misa.
Empezando este mes de Octubre, habrán personas en la entrada principal de la Iglesia para asistirte, saludarte, y darte la bienvenida
cuando ballas entrando a Misa. En este ministerio de amabilidad y la generosidad de disposición para realizarlo, yo creo. No es lo
que damos lo que cuenta, es el amor con el cual lo damos. Que este ministerio de amor y compasión nos una aún más los unos con
los otros, para que como una sola comunidad, juntos podamos adorar a nuestro Señor con una sola mente y un solo corazón.
ALEGRIA… FELICIDAD...
Si la imagen de la viña dominaban en las lecturas del pasado domingo, hoy destaca la imagen del banquete, del gran festín al que Dios llama a todos los hombres (1. lectura y evangelio). También, como el pasado domingo, convendrá presentar fundamentalmente la imagen del banquete en su sentido más profundo,
más que detenerse en los detalles de la parábola de Mt. Para que la homilía sea un eco de la gran llamada del Padre: "Venid a la fiesta".
-EL GRAN FESTÍN: Decía, hace tres años, en estas hojas: "es importante notar que JC basa su parábola en una imagen que sus oyentes conocían bien: la
imagen del convite, del banquete, era muy conocida porque se halla muy presente en el Antiguo Testamento. Podríamos decir que JC la reactualiza, concretándola en unos aspectos.
"Por eso podemos preguntarnos si el comentario homilético de hoy no debería basarse más en la primera lectura que en el evangelio. O, mejor dicho, si lo que
debemos explicar es más el núcleo de la imagen (el Reino y la Iglesia y la Eucaristía como banquete, como gran fiesta), que no las derivaciones que presenta el
evangelio.
"Lo que sería erróneo sería insistir tanto en el NO del hombre que esconda el SI de Dios. La imagen y toda la parábola sobre el banquete de Dios, es sobre todo
un canto a la voluntad amorosa, comunicadora de vida, de Dios. ¿Entendemos el Reino como un gran festín de vida? ¿La Iglesia -signo y vanguardia del Reinolo parece? ¿Participamos así de la Eucaristía?".
Añadiría ahora lo que recuerdan las "notas exegéticas" de este domingo. El tema e incluso las expresiones del texto de Isaías son abundamentemente utilizadas,
reasumidas, por el Nuevo Testamento, en textos muy importantes tanto del Apocalipsis como de San Pablo. Lo que significa que la imagen del banquete que
simboliza la comunión total y festiva con la vida de Dios, la superación de todo dolor y la victoria sobre la muerte, era algo muy vivo entre los primeros cristianos.
De ahí que el centro de interés de la homilía deba ser el transmitir el sentido profundo de esta imagen de la gran fiesta, el gran convite que el Padre quiere para
nosotros. Y que cada eucaristía anuncia.
-RESPUESTA AL AMOR DE DIOS. Quizá en el último domingo dedicado a estas cuatro parábolas de Mt que nos han presentado diversos aspectos de la historia del Reino, se podría resumir sintéticamente su línea de fondo: Dios, el Padre, nos comunica su amor -y JC es su gran portavoz- y este amor de Dios debe
hallar una respuesta de hecho en nosotros. Dios nos envía a trabajar a su viña y a todos los que se apuntan, más pronto o más tarde, les da generosamente el
mismo jornal (d. 25); la respuesta no debe ser un "sí" de palabra, sino de hechos aunque de palabra se diga "no" (d. 26); nosotros somos la viña que él quiere y
que espera que dé frutos de justicia y derecho (d. 27); su llamada a trabajar es un camino hacia la gran fiesta eterna que él quiere para nosotros (d. 28).
Siempre, por tanto, la dinámica de estas parábolas es un don de amor ofrecido por Dios, una respuesta que capte que sólo con amor se responde de verdad. Y
la parábola de hoy -la imagen del gran banquete que presentan las lecturas de hoy- es el gran exponente que no se trata de un juego comercial, de un limitarse a
cumplir, sino de una llamada a querer participar en una vida sin límites, en la gran fiesta, en el festín eterno que ya ahora se inicia para todos aquellos que valoran el amar, el darse, el servir, el compartir. Todo lo que simboliza y expresa la Eucaristía. Y que las comunidades cristianas -la Iglesia- deberían significar con
sencillez, verdad y humildad.
-UNA IGLESIA FESTIVA. Si en domingos anteriores -durante esta serie de parábolas- proponíamos una concreción referida a la iglesia -es decir, a los cristianos, hoy la concreción podría ser esta llamada a conseguir una Iglesia -un estilo de vida cristiana- festivo, gozoso, ilusionado.
¿Cómo es posible que quien cree en el gran anuncio de una fiesta eterna se presente triste, insista más en lo que hay de negativo en la vida humana, no valore
los aspectos positivos que son anuncios e inicios de la gran fiesta? Como decía el viejo cura de la novela de Bernanos al joven cura atormentado: "Si vas con
esta cara de tristeza, nadie podrá creer que eres mensajero de Dios que nos prepara un gran banquete, una inmensa fiesta para siempre".
Un aspecto importante de esta Iglesia festiva debería ser la eucaristía dominical. Pero, evidentemente, el predicador no podrá exhortar a los oyentes a vivir festivamente la misa si la celebración no refleja mínimamente que se trata de una fiesta!

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
COME TO THE FEAST
"On this mountain, the Lord of hosts / will provide for all peoples / a feast of rich food and choice wines" (Isaiah 25:6). That's what
Isaiah tells us today. God is putting together a huge party for "all peoples," to "wipe away / the tears from every face" (Isaiah 25:8).
And what does Jesus tell us? The reign of God, he says, "may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son" (Matthew
22:2). When the guests didn't come, the king had his servants go out "into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you
find" (Matthew 22:9). We are called to deliver that invitation.
One of the themes woven into today's liturgy is that of divine generosity. Asleep to reality, people often think they have "earned"
what they have. In our better moments, though, we know that all our gifts--even the spiritual gifts--come through God's generosity.
Our vocation is to invite people, to remind them the tickets aren't for sale. We can only show up and say thank you.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The confessional is a familiar setting in literature and drama. Everyone from Doestoevsky and Shakespeare down the line to Seinfeld
has used the sacrament to tragic or comic effect or to reveal aspects of character otherwise hidden. All of this theater, from world
classics to slapstick, has had a numbing effect on our own expectations, and has skewed how the culture looks at us and our struggle
with sin and forgiveness, hope and healing.
Yet the artists are on to something. The reconciliation chapel is a place where hearts are laid bare, where honesty is the watchword,
and people confess their deepest needs. It is also a place of rebirth, or at least realignment. It is, like the baptismal font, a place where
something dies, and where something else is born. Today, although literature has barely caught up, the place is usually not the dark
and gloomy cabinet of old; rather it is a chapel that speaks of peace, serenity, and the comfort of a welcome home. People in one
parish were astonished recently to see their children skipping with delight as they left the place of their first confession. We have to
wait a bit for world literature to catch up with this reality, but at least we can experience the joy of penance, the thrill of a new beginning, the assurance of God's love.
