OF ADULTS) is calling forth those among us who may be
considering membership in the Catholic Church. Have you
considered becoming a Catholic? Do you need to complete
your Catholic Christian Initiation by celebrating the
Sacraments of Confirmation and or the Eucharist? We are
meeting each Tuesday evening in the Conference Room. If

Diversity Youth Group
Caroline Stanfill has decided to step down as youth minister. Fr.
Bob Spencer and indeed all the staff wish to thank her for her
years of dedicated service to St. Gerard’s Youth Ministry; may
God continue to bless her.
We are working on a plan to put together two teams of folks to
continue our Youth Ministry – one team to work with 6th through
8th graders and the second to minister to the 9th through 12th
grade students. If you are interested in joining either of these
teams, please call Fr. Bob at the parish office.

Catholic Women’s Conference: “Women on the Way”

The Center for Marriage, Family, and Life is gearing up
for our 2nd Annual Diocesan Catholic Women’s
Conference: “Women on the Way”.
The conference will feature multiple breakout sessions,
Mass, Reconciliation, and expo area with several
different vendors and ministries represented.

cuanto al matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo.
Con profunda desilusión, supimos hoy que La Corte Suprema de EEUU ha rechazado la
demanda para la revisión judicial de la decisión del tribunal inferior que derogo la
enmienda a la constitución de Virginia que prohibía el matrimonio entre personas del
mismo sexo y leyes similares en cuatro otro estados. Por eso, los matrimonios entre
personas del mismo sexo ya comenzaron hoy en Virginia.
Este hecho refleja una mala interpretación fundamental de la índole natural del
matrimonio y representa una injustica a más de un millón de votantes virginianos que
querían consagrar en nuestra constitución el matrimonio como la unión de un solo hombre
y una sola mujer.
De generación en generación el matrimonio ha sido afirmado porque beneficia al
bien común -el matrimonio reconocido como unión de dos individuos iguales y
complementarios —es decir un hombre y una mujer- quienes al entregar su vida en
unión puedan crear una familia. El matrimonio no solo beneficia al hombre y la
mujer que lo contraen sino también a los hijos por las contribuciones particulares
que los padres y las madres ofrecen a la vida familiar. Por lo anterior expuesto, la
constitución de Virginia reconocía correctamente la contribución única del
matrimonio a los hijos y al bien común.
Como obispos continuaremos afirmando la verdad acerca del matrimonio, la unión a
lo largo de la vida entre un hombre y una mujer. Y así como también la importancia
esencial al bien común. Como pastores, maestros, y líderes de fe es lo mínimo que
podemos. Es nuestra esperanza ferviente que La Corte Suprema de EEUU
reconsidere este asunto fundamental en el futuro.

On Supreme Court Refusal to Hear Appeal of Virginia Same-Sex Marriage Ruling
With deep disappointment, we learned today that the U.S. Supreme Court has denied review of
lower-court decisions that struck down Virginia’s law prohibiting same-sex marriage and similar
laws in four other states. Because of the Supreme Court’s denial, marriages between couples of
the same sex have begun today in Virginia. This occurrence reflects a fundamental
misunderstanding of the intrinsic nature of marriage and represents an injustice to over a million
Virginia voters, whose decision was to enshrine the understanding of marriage as the union of
one man and one woman into our state’s constitution.
Marriage has been affirmed by countless generations because it uniquely benefits the common
good by recognizing the union of two equal but complementary individuals – that is, a man and a
woman – who, by their life-giving union, may create a family. Marriage not only benefits the
man and woman who enter it, but also best serves children because of the particular contributions
that mothers and fathers bring to family life. Therefore, Virginia’s constitution rightly
recognized the unique contributions marriage makes to children and to the common good.
As Bishops, we will continue to affirm the truth about marriage, the lifelong union of one man
and one woman, as well as its essential importance to the common good. As pastors, teachers,
and faith leaders, we can do nothing less. It is our fervent hope that the Supreme Court will
reconsider this fundamental issue in the future.
