John’s Notes: Solemnity of All Saints: This Saturday we remembered all of the saints who have gone before us whether formally named by the Church or not. Let us be inspired by their example to live a Christian life, serving others and glorifying God according to the gifts we have received. All Souls Day Message: This week’s bulletin cover lists the names of those who died this last year in our cluster of parishes. Again this year, there are so many who have left us. As I read each individual’s name, I feel a loss both for myself and a deep loss for the person’s family, community and for our parishes. The loss of a spouse, parent, child and friend creates an empty place in our heart. Our prayers and our faith give us hope that this isn’t the end of the story. But that someday we and all of our loved ones can be transformed by God’s grace to a new life together with God. Today we remember our beloved dead, with renewed hope, as November begins. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. What Is Heaven Like? In the book, The Gift of Peace, by Joseph Cardinal Bernadine of Chicago, he writes: “Many people have asked me to tell them about heaven and the afterlife. I sometimes smile at the request because I do not know any more than they do. Yet, when one young man asked if I looked forward to being united with God and all those who have gone before me, I made a connection to something I said earlier in this book. The first time I traveled with my mother and sister to my parents’ homeland in Tonadico di Primiero, in northern Italy, I felt as if I had been there before. After years of looking through my mother’s photo albums, I knew the mountains, the land, the houses, the people. As soon as we entered the valley, I said, ‘My God, I know this place. I am home.’ Somehow I think crossing from this life into the life eternal will be similar.” Thanks“giving”: Let us give in Fall is the time of year Thanksgiving for when we enjoy the bounty of the harvest and recognize that ALL God’s many Blessings we have comes from God. Let To Parish………5-8% us generously give in thanksgivTo Diocese……..1% ing for the many blessings that To Charities…...1-4% we have received from God. St. Mary Church, Glen Haven St. Mary’s News: Reflection: “Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones.” Wisdom of Solomon 3:9 Here’s the ironic thing about people who are generous. Those that give freely and cheerfully do not do it to be rewarded. They do it to show their love for God and their neighbors. Yet, because of their generosity, they typically are given more than they gave away!
