8B July 18, 2014 TIMBERJAY Newspapers VERMILION COMMUNITY COLLEGE Seasonal Law Enforcement program at VCC to continue WASHINGTON, D.C.– After a push from U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken and U.S. Representatives Rick Nolan and Betty McCollum, the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) announced that it will protect Vermilion Community College’s (VCC) Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program. Earlier this year, as the Department of Interior considered possible reductions to the number of accredited academic institutions offering the Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program, the lawmakers called on Secretary Jewell to pre- serve VCC’s program. “This is great news for VCC and the Minnesotans who will continue to benefit from the Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program,” Klobuchar said. “VCC’s program has a strong track record of connecting Minnesota students with good job opportunities in a range of fields, and now that important work will be able to continue.” “Vermilion Community College has a long history of success in getting Minnesotans the skills they need to work in land management jobs,” Franken said. “And we need to make sure that this specialized training is available to future students. Wolfe Rosella “Rose” Marie Wolfe, 85, of Cook, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014, at the Cook Nursing Home. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 25 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Pastor Bruce Hannem will be the officiant. Singing will be congregational and Cynthia Hannem will be the pianist. A reception in Rose’s honor will follow in the church social hall immediately after the service. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery of Angora. Arrangements are with Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. Rose was born on June 27, 1929, at International Falls, the daughter of John and Helen (Begg) Sutliffe. She grew up in International Falls, graduating from high school there in 1947. She married A . G e o rg e Wo l f e i n September 1951 in the Falls. Rose was employed for MANDO (Minnesota and Ontario Paper Co.) in the Falls, first as a mail clerk and later in its research lab. Her husband George worked for the DWP (Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific) Railway, then CN (Canadian National) Railway upon their merger. They moved to Angora and later Virginia, when George transferred to become station manager for the railroad. Rose worked for the First National Bank in Cook, then the First National Bank of Virginia. Rose’s passion was sports. She was a member of the Virginia Women’s Volleyball Team, she curled, and she was a 200point club bowler. She loved playing golf and was still an accomplished golfer in her later years. George retired early due to health reasons and Rose also retired, to become his caregiver. They moved to Arizona in 1975, making their residence there for the next 20 years. George passed away in 1997 and in 2003, Rose moved back to Virginia. She had resided in Cook since 2012. Rose is survived by a sister, Jacqueline (Glen) Weum of Lake VermilionCook. She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1997; son, Richard in 2013; and a sister, Helen Gross in 2003. Lorraine L. Hahne Lorraine Lydia Hahne, 84, of Peoria, Ariz., longtime resident of Lake Vermilion-Tower and Virginia, passed away on Feb. 16, 2014, of natural causes at her place of residence. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 25 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 6959 Hwy. 169. Lorraine was born on March 9, 1929, to Enfred and Selina (Huttula) Erickson of Virginia. She grew up in Virginia and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1947. She then attended Virginia Junior College. Lorraine was united in marriage to Walter Evert Haurunen on July 10, 1948. They owned and operated Haurunens grocery store from 1953 to 1972. She was also a retail salesperson at Woolworth’s/Woolco of Virginia from 1972 to 1982. After the death of Walter, she married John Paul Hahne on Feb. 13, 1982, and moved to Lake Vermilion. Lorraine was a member of the Women of the Moose and served as Senior Regent and Recorder. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi and served three terms as President. After moving to Lake Vermilion she was on the Greenwood Township Board of Planning and Zoning. Her main interests included walking, swimming, cross-country skiing, aerobic exercise and being an avid reader. Lorraine is survived by three daughters, Wynn Klun (significant other David Desannoy) of Lake Vermilion-Tower and Peoria, Ariz., Wynn’s children, Heather Harte (daughter Addison), and Amanda (Leon) Thomas; Kathy (Terry) Johnson of Rosemount and Fort Myers, Fla., Kathy’s children, Tyler Davidson and Jessica (Ben) Rapp (children Olivia and Mason); and Beth (Kevin) Marbury of Peoria, Ariz., their sons, Kevin (Brianna) (son Sean) and Brian; one son, David Haurunen of Sun Prairie, Wis.; niece, Lynn (Steve) Mahowald; nephew, Alan (Deloris) Kangas; and sisters-in-law, Lois (Paul) Borg and Gail (Barry Tomsich) Nelson. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Sally (Don) Kangas in September 1969; nephews, Gary and Tim Kangas; husbands, Walter Haurunen in August 1978 and John Hahne in April 2002; and son-in-law, Richard Klun in January 2011. Mr. Thomas says that if the board is having a meeting where decisions are going to be made, they need to have a special meeting where the public is aware of what the board is doing. Brandon says to call it a special meeting. The studying will have to be done before the meeting. The meeting is set for June 11, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Steve asks about tabling the other issue. He will be attending TUG meetings in June and July. 5th grade students have completed MCA Science testing online. Trish Sullivan, 6th grade teacher, showed a video presentation of the 6th grade trip to Chicago. Superintendent/Principal Report reviewed. Meeting attended: Insurance Mtg., NSEC Mtg., and Teacher Evaluation Training. The year ended on a positive note with both high school and elementary banquets well attended. Summer school is scheduled. The ISD 707 Teacher Development and Evaluation Plan were finalized. Professional Development days for SFA were set for next school year. The regular meeting of the Board of Education of Independent School District No. 707 was called to order at 2:06 p.m. by Chairman Benner. Chairman Benner wanted it noted that he had correspondence from three board members requesting the meeting. He was tired of being blamed for everything. That’s why they are here. The actual agenda and things like that are the purpose for this meeting. He gets tired of being blamed for these things and has the correspondence. 13-165 Motion was made by M. Chairman Benner says Tara Geshick is excused. Chairman Benner read the section from the board agenda regarding comments. Chairman Benner asks Steve Thomas what agenda he had because the one he read had Summer Opacich not resigning. Steve Thomas told the board that they needed to read the resolution regarding Summer Opacich. Steve Thomas said that she resigned and to rescind the motion for tenure and then accept her resignation. the board that Summer Opacich decided she didn’t want her letter of resignation considered. Steve Thomas said the board should accept the letter of resignation. Superintendent Villebrun asked Summer Opacich to speak. Summer Opacich said she was advised by the union to rescind her letter of resignation. Steve Thomas told the board to rescind the motion for tenure and motion to dismiss her. Karlene Chosa moves to rescind the tenure. Dawn Benner asks if the same person who made the motion to grant tenure must rescind the motion. Superintendent Villebrun told the board they only needed to vote on not renewing Summer Opacich’s contract. Chairman Benner asked Steve Thomas and Steve said to vote on both the rescinding tenure and not renewing her contract.
