Pastoral Thought
The Holy Family. Our own families. So much
alike, all of us, in that we come from and belong to
a family. Yet no two families alike, each with its
unique history, ways, network of relationships and
strong feelings. And still “the human race passes
on by way of the family”. (St. John Paul)
It seems to me that we must respect and
cherish each person’s family. Some families came
into existence through a textbook courtship and
marriage into an ever-deepening love of a man
and woman over many years. Other families may
not include both a father and a mother, or may
have step-parents. For not a few persons, family
upbringing has held some pain, and even trauma.
The Church is in the process—spanning two
worldwide synods—of re-visioning the family. In
our modern era, certain aspects of family are
more fragile than formerly, especially as regards
permanence in marriage. Divorce is an evil, yet
sometimes divorce is necessary and frequently a
second marriage is a “redeeming” experience. It
gives two persons a second chance at loving in a
committed and permanent union. Does Catholic
Church law and moral teaching recognize and
support such a redeeming relationship, which is at
times clearly God-given? Sadly, no. The law as it
is officially stated is blind to certain evident
workings of Divine Grace.
Yes, the Church recognizes that a second
marriage, though not officially recognized, can be
in good conscience, and a holy event where God
is present. But this is scant help for most people.
Annulment, which gives a second chance, is a
complicated process, carried out frequently in a
legalistic way, and for some people not affirming
of their faith.
We are being invited to a deeper faith vision of
man and woman, of all human love, of what family
is. Pope Francis sees this. Persons who say that
the Church would be “lowering its standards” are
mistaken. The Church is re-stating Jesus’
command “Love one another as I have loved you”
for a new era. If you are into “lower” and “higher”
standards, it will be higher.

JESSE TREE
Somehow the words thank you do not seem
sufficient. Every year since I’ve taken over Jesse Tree,
our parishioners have given whole-heartedly to help
those in need. This year our totals are higher than last
year. We are so blessed to have all of you.
We helped 25 families—some with many children;
some with no children. Many are out of work; many are
facing chronic health problems. Every story is a little
different , but equally touching. Our desire is to give
them some hope and a month with fewer worries than
usual. In addition to the wonderful gifts, we are able to
give them gift cards and pay electric/rent for them.
We on the committee are especially blessed
because we get to interact with these wonderful people.
They are so thankful and I want each and every
parishioner to know that. Please keep them in your
prayers.
Many thanks to my committee members without
whom this undertaking would be impossible. Sincere
thanks to Barb Viera and her Angel Tree committee from
St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine who are so generous to
us at Christmas and year round. God bless all of you.
Linda Micucio
WE ARE GOD'S HOLY FAMILY
The scriptures of Israel are filled with
many stories of barren couples who were
miraculously granted the gift of children by
God. Surely the best known among these
is the first reading from today, from which
Luke took inspiration when he recounted the
miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and
Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to
Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given
examples or role models of those who trusted in God.
More than examples of those who trust, they are
models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own
presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of
the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God
who can make life grow where none ought to; a God
who can turn death around into a new and unimagined
life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble
parents in an insignificant town and make him into a
light for all the world. This is what we, as God's holy
family, are called to do each day: to trust not in
ourselves and the way we think things should be, but
to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a
God of endless promise.
