So, I present the following as a gentle reminder of the best practices for receiving the Sacrament: Do prepare yourself for Holy Communion by confessing your sins and receiving absolution. Don’t come to receive Holy Communion if you are conscious of mortal sin. Do prepare yourself for Holy Communion by fasting for at least one hour before receiving. Don’t come to receive Holy Communion chewing gum. Do consider receiving Holy Communion on the tongue. It is the ancient and venerable practice of the Church. Don’t bite! Do hold out both hands, one over the other, if you intend to receive Holy Communion in the hand. Don’t hold out your hands and bow at the same time. Bow or genuflect first, while the person in front of you is receiving, and then step forward to receive. If you receive in the hand, do consume the Host in the full view of the Eucharistic minister (deacons, priests or bishops are ordinary ministers; consecrated religious, seminarians and laity may be commissioned as extraordinary ministers). Again, always consume the consecrated Host immediately after receiving in the hand while in the full view of the Eucharistic minister. Never walk away from the minister without having first consumed the Host. I’ve instructed the ministers to chase after you if you do walk away w i t h o u t f i r s t h av i n g consumed the Host and to ask you to consume it immediately or to return it. Likewise, never carry the Host to the Chalice to dip it into the Chalice. As Catholics, we do not communicate ourselves; we receive Communion. Also, never ever carry the Host to the pews or remove the Host from the church. If you are an adult responsible for children who have not made their First Holy Communion, do not let the children receive. In conformity with the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (160), though the norm for reception of Communion in the United States is standing, the faithful may kneel to receive Holy Communion. As a word of caution, however, do be careful. Since the Cathedral renovation, we no longer have a Communion rail and it may be more difficult for some people to get up after kneeling for reception. At all times remember that we are privileged by the initiative of God’s grace to receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
