Important guidelines for self study using Ulpan-Or
Basic Level Set (Kita Alef + Verbs)
Study method:
No
tC
op
y
We recommend studying no more than 2-5 pages during each study session. First listen
2-3 times to the CD, while reading the text from the book. Then a few hours later listen
once again to the CD, then check yourself by covering the Hebrew portion and saying
aloud the vocabulary and the text in Hebrew as you look at the English – see how much
you remember.
The English serves as an "anchor" for remembering the short dialogues and questions.
If you have difficulties, listen and read the material again. Only after feeling comfortable
with the new text and vocabulary should you proceed to the next passage.
Each section is linked like Lego railway cars, each fitted to the one before to make
learning Hebrew reasonable and fun.
Do
Usually, students can study Hebrew successfully on their own by using Ulpan-Or study
kits.
O
r-
To achieve best results, we recommend studying using either our GDL (Guided Distance
Learning) programs or our self study programs.
n-
In the GDL program students study with a personal coach from Ulpan-Or while lessons
are conducted either over the internet or by phone.
pa
For the self study program, students initially get personal guidance from Ulpan-Or, and
then get a detailed self-study program divided into sessions.

Introduction
The structure of this book
Our objective is to get you to start speaking Hebrew right away from the
very beginning of your studies.
op
y
Using our method, we will build the Hebrew language step by step, like adding cars to a
Lego train. Soon you will have the skill and ability to express yourself in Hebrew.
No
tC
You will get the feel of the language, its music and its structure in a natural way. The
grammar will accompany us along the journey in a clear and simple, ready-to-use
manner.
Do
The book is divided into 7 units (train cars), that are headed by a locomotive. Each unit is
dedicated to a certain field in the Hebrew language, while the link between the units-cars
is done by having useful expressions and unique language structures.
So, we always keep our connection with the locomotive and between the cars.

General Guidelines for Using This Study Kit
This study kit provides Hebrew translations using both text in Hebrew and phonetic
pronunciation, so that at the beginning of your course, it will be easier to read and pronounce the
words. The transliteration is printed in capital letters.
The audio CD further guides you with proper pronunciation of the Hebrew text providing
additional confidence.
op
y
In most cases the phonetic pronunciation is straight-forward, however it is worth mentioning the
following:
We chose the phonetic "KH" to imitate the sound CH as in Scottish "LOCH"

No
tC
Now – a few general rules:
Masculine plural ending has generally "IM" sound

Hebrew

‫הַ ְמבו ְר ֵג ִרים‬
Please note that in general (and there are many exceptions) words in single ending with
"AH" sound are feminine.

Feminine plural ending has generally "OT" sound

Basic Meeting and Greeting Questions
When we meet a new person in Israel there are four basic questions
that we usually ask.
 What's you name?
 Where do you live?
 Where are you from?
 How do you do?
op
y
We will now study how to ask these questions in Hebrew. Listen to the following
expressions on the CD and repeat them slowly.
No

Remember – the main thing is to use the new vocabulary in live situations immediately.
We recommend that you ask these questions aloud to several people. Get their response.
Use them whenever you meet Israelis. Make these questions come out automatically.
