OUR
REGION
Our new municipality called Škocjan lies on the southeast of Slovenia. It has 38 villages and small towns and its landscape is
very picturesque and interesting. It has narrow valleys and streams and humps and low hills which are partly covered with
forrest. Some of them are considered little paradise for vineyard keepers. If you happen to take a walk nearby, you may run
across friendly and hospitable people who know how to take care of tired travellers.

TOURISTIC OFFERING
The river Krka is a natural limit at the southern part of the Škocjan municipality. Its waves are full of trouts and other type of
fish, a real paradise for fishermen and also for vineyard keepers because there are large fields with vines. If you feel like having
a picnic under the clear sky, then you may call the people responsable for taking you to nice places. Apart from the delicious
home made food, you can also enjoy yourself at the king of »Cviček« (which is a charachteristic and typical wine from this part
of Slovenia- Dolenjska), or you can also find yourself looking for mushrooms in the forrest, or just enjoying at the beautiful
view all around you.
ATTRACTIONS
In this part of Slovenia we also have a very old and rich cultural heritage. You can pay a visit to the church of St. Kancian in
Škocjan, which was first mentioned in 1526. This Middle Age building has been modified many times. The last modification, in
1778, gave it its actual appearance.
Opposite the church, there is an old building – an inn today, there are many inns in this part of Slovenia- dr. Knoblehar's birth
place. Dr Knoblehar worked as a missionary near the Nile. He helped thousands and thousands people. The municipality of
Škocjan celebrates his birth date.
If you are nearby, then you can't miss the two arch stone bridge across the stream Radulja. This bridge is one of three still left in
Slovenia. This charachteristic bridge is impressed in the coat-of-arms of Škocjan. There is also a pilgrim's path which leads up
to the church of Holly Mother in Stopno. It used to be a pilgrimige way in the times of the Goths, as it is written by Valvasor.
The region of Škocjan is very suitable for taking a few days rest because here you will be able to find the peace, the strenght and
the energy you need to cope with the difficulties of your everyday life.
HISTORICAL GLIMPSES
The part between the stream Radulja and the river Krka and all up to Telč in Mokronog is a nice place which has been from
ancient times appropiate to be settled. Many ruins have been found here from the times of the Romans. The city called
Gutenwert or Gotno Brdo under the ruler of the the Bishop of Freising, today called Otok, it used to be very important and
gives us a good historical reference. In this city it used to be a Court of Law and a very well developed trading and in Hrvaški
Brodu used to be a kind of workshop for making coins. Through it past the famous road called Emona-Siscia. Nobody knows
why this town desappeared. One of the theories says that probably the Turks destroyed it by the year 1473. Otok used to be a
parish for two centuries, but in 1492 it was moved to Škocjan. According to records, Škocjan was first mentioned in 1291.
FAMOUS LOCAL PEOPLE
We have already mentioned Ignac Knoblehar, who was born in Škocjan and was a missionary. He died in Naple wen he was 38
years old. He is buried in the cementery of barefood Augustines in Naples. Fran Metelko, who was a priest, a teacher of
Slovene and translator for German language, was also born in Škocjan by the end of the 18th century . He wrote many
textbooks and prayer books for school children and he tought them religion every Sunday for more than 40 years. That is why
our school is named by him. He left all his belongings to poor students who were good at fruit growing and Slovene language.
Žiga Bohinc, a very good musician and Jožef Jerman, who was a fighter for the Slovene independance, were also born in
