A man goes into a barbershop to have his hair cut and get a shave. As the barber began his work, they began to have a good conversation. They were talking about so many different things and topics. Then they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said: "I don't believe that God exists.” Parish Clergy: "Why do you say that?" asked the customer. "Well, you just have to go out on the street to see that God does not exist. Tell me, if God exists would there be so many sick people?, would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be no suffering or pain. I can't imagine how a loving God would allow such things.” Rev. Fr. Cesar Rubiano, ext. 119 (Pastoral Administrator) Rev. Fr. Raymond Hughes (Weekend Assistant) Rev. Fr. Philip Cordisco, O.Ss.T Mr. Guido Mattozzi, Deacon Mr. Benito Torres, Deacon The customer thought for a while, but didn't respond as he did not want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the shop, he saw a man on the street with long, dirty, stringy hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkempt. "Barber's don't exist, because if they did, there would be no people with long dirty hair and untrimmed beards, like the guy outside your shop." "Ah, but barbers do exist! That's what happens when people do not come to me", said the barber. "Exactly!", said the customer. "That's the point! God, too, DOES exist! That's what happens when people don't look to Him for help. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world." Page Two 29th Sunday Ordinary Time 594 A TIME OF INTRODUCTION: After a month of activities and of getting to know the general happenings of what we do and what we have here in our beautiful parish, I would like to take the time to introduce myself so that you too may know me a bit more about me. I was born on October 14, 1967 in a small village in Colombia called San Juan de Rioseco (St. John of Dryriver), in the department or district called Cundiamacra, not too far from the capital which is Bogota. The beautiful area because of its scenery, it’s humble, peasant, and simple people. Agriculture is our main work especially in coffee and livestock. At the age of 5 we moved to Armero, a department of Tolima, because of my father’s work with the bank, and lived there for almost 11 years. That is where I attended grammar school and high school, at the American School of the Presbyterian Church. It was during my final year of high school when I decided to enter the seminary to learn more about the Catholic Church, for it had only been a year that I had begun to participate in a much more committed way in the Church. So here I am in the seminary, and towards the end of that year, my family, due to the tragedy of the Nevado del Ruiz (November 13, 1985 when close to 30,000 people died) they moved to Girardot where they still live today with my nephew. We had already been through hardship when my father suffered an accident and was left a paraplegic; this was due to a car accident cause by a driver under the influence of drugs who struck him and his friend as they walked away from their place of employment. My father not only outlived this first incident but survived the catastrophe of the volcano eruption with the help of my younger sister who drag him up a hill to safety where they both survived the dark night of November 13th. After this stage of my life I moved forward in my priestly formation enrolling at the Congregation of Jesus and Mary of the Eudists Fathers, then at Minute of God which is non-profit spiritual organization of Catholic religious and moving on to Javeriana University, where I received my degrees in philosophy and theology. I arrived in the United States in 1996 and have performed as the chaplain at the university; then studied Spirituality and Eastern Medicine and did an internship at Andrews Air Force AFB in Washington; then in New York I was director of a program for the prevention, care and support of people with HIV / AIDS; I was a family chaplain and assistant at the A-1 Morgue throughout efforts and at Ground Zero (9/11); I also worked as chaplain for the New York City Hospital, where I also achieved my certifications as "Counselor for alcohol and substances abuse” and "family mediator" (conflict resolution). For four years I also participated as a counselor / chaplain for the Domestic Violence Bureau of the District Attorney’s office at the Center for Family Justice. In St. John's University, achieved my Masters in Theology with an emphasis on Social Assistance. After serving 9 months in the parish in Sea Girt for the Diocese of Trenton, Bishop Smith asked if I would be his secretary, where I served until his retirement. After the transition of bishops I was sent to Rome where I finish my degree in Moral studies, with emphasis in BioEthics (my thesis was based on pain and suffering). I then began my first year in the doctorate program and have since completed it. I write about Neurobiology of Morals, to have a better understanding of Empathy, of nature and the reasoning for our actions. Now I am here with you, I will continue to write my life’s history… the difference being that now I want to also be part of your history and I want you to be a part of mine. God bless you, from the heart: Fr. Cesar A . Rubiano Fr. Cesar A. Rubiano 594 19 October 2014 WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Today is World Mission Sunday! God calls Cyrus by name and leads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus his title, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens doors and unbars gates before him. And God does all of this so that the people will know that “I am the LORD,” and that “there is none besides me” (Isaiah 45:6). Paul opens his letter with essentially the same notion—that in God alone we find our grace and peace. Paul also gives thanks to God on our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. And in the familiar Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. TODAY’S READINGS: First Reading: Isaiah 45:1, 4-6 Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21. The Lord is King and there is no other. We are to render to God, therefore, fitting praise and service, as is God’s due. God’s word to us, in turn, is a matter of power and strength, to be lived with conviction of heart. Si Dios existiera, no habría sufrimiento o dolor. OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS PARISH ORGANIZATION NEWS LADIES OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: Next Corp. Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men who are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them to a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men through prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings are not meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering if the priesthood is your true vocation and build your relationship with Christ along the way. If you are a faithful, single Roman Catholic man, between the ages of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself whether God is calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to attend this month’s discernment on October 26, from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at St. Gregory the Great Parish, 4620 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Sq, NJ. Join Rev. Michael McClane and Rev. Tom Vala, as they share their experiences of the priesthood, followed by prayer and concluding with a great meal and conversation. Please register with the Dioceses of Trenton Vocation Office at [email protected] or by calling 609-406-7449. Join us at this exciting time as you discover and respond to His invitation!
