EL AMOR DE NAVIDAD
Cada diciembre me prometía tener una experiencia tranquila y pacífica durante la
Navidad. Había reducido mis obligaciones secundarias como las de escribir tarjetas
extensas, hornear interminablemente, decorar, e incluso el gastar demasiado dinero.
Pero todavía me encontré agotada, incapaz de valorar los preciosos momentos
familiares, y por supuesto, el verdadero significado de la Navidad.
Mi hijo Nicolás estaba en el kínder ese año. Era una temporada emocionante para
un niño de seis añitos. Pasó semanas ensayando las canciones para la producción
navideña de su escuela, “El Show de Invierno”. No tuve corazón para decirle que
estaría trabajando la noche de la producción. No quise faltar a su momento de
esplendor y hablé con su profesora. Ella me aseguró que habría un ensayo la mañana
de la presentación y que todos los padres que no pudieran asistir en la noche estaban
invitados. Afortunadamente Nicolás parecía estar conforme con ese arreglo.
Así que la mañana del ensayo llegue con diez minutos de anticipación, encontré un
lugar en el piso de la cafetería y me senté. Alrededor de la habitación vi a varios
otros padres buscando sus asientos en silencio. Mientras esperaba, los estudiantes se
dirigían hacia el escenario. Cada clase acompañados por su maestro iban sentándose
de piernas cruzadas en el piso. Entonces cada grupo, uno por uno, se ponían de pie
para realizar su canto.
Como el sistema público escolar había dejado hace mucho tiempo de referirse a los
días de fiesta como “Navidad” no esperaba nada más que canciones de diversión,
entretenimientos comerciales como los de los renos, Santa Claus, los de de nieve y
la alegría. Por eso, cuando el grupo de mi hijo subió a cantar “Amor de Navidad”
(“Christmas Love” en inglés) me asombró el atrevido título. Nicolás estaba muy
alegre, al igual que todos sus compañeros de clase, adornados con guantes de
pelusas, suéteres rojo y con gorros de nieve brillante sobre sus cabezas. Cada uno de
los niños de la primera fila en el centro del escenario sostenía sobre su cabeza un
letrero grande con una sola letra y juntos deletrearon el título de la canción.
Mientras los niños cantaban “la N es de Navidad” un estudiante levantaba el letrero
con la N. Entonces la “A de Alegría” y uno a uno siguieron hasta que cada
estudiante presento su porción del mensaje completo, "Amor de Navidad".
La presentación iba de lo mejor, hasta que notamos a una niña pequeña y tranquila
en la fila del frente sosteniendo su letra “M” de cabeza, sin darse cuenta que su letra
“M” aparecía como “W”. La audiencia de niños del 1º al 6º grado se burlaron del
error de la pequeña niña. Pero ella no tenía ni idea que se estaban riendo de ella, así
que siguió de pie, sosteniendo en alto orgullosa su “W”. Aunque muchos de los
profesores trataron de callar a los niños, la risa continuó hasta que la última letra se
alzó y entonces todos leímos el mensaje. Un silencio llenó la sala y los ojos
comenzaron a abrirse. En ese momento, comprendimos la razón por la que
estábamos ahí, por qué razón celebramos esta fiesta, por qué, aun en medio del caos,
hay una razón para la celebración. Pues con todas las letras en alto, el mensaje se
leía fuerte y claro:
“C H R I S T W A S L O V E” (“Cristo fue Amor”)
Y, yo creo, Él todavía lo es. Que cada uno de ustedes tenga una Feliz Navidad y que
reflexionen en Su sorprendente Amor por nosotros… ¡muchas bendiciones!
¡¡¡Feliz cumpleaños Jesús!!!

My dear parishioners:
What can I say differently about Christmas that has not been said yet? Well
is very difficult even to say anything about anything that we can call NEW!
The Message of Christmas is already 2,000 years old itself, but the newness
is that the content of the message is RENEWED in our lives day by day,
year after year.
In this season we all go back to our inner child to continue a celebration, a
celebration based on the principles of tradition, religion, spirituality and
faith. What great occasion to put our hand in the heart to question what I am doing with
my life? How am I living to the fullest? What am I doing for my Church and for others?
At the end the decorations, the nativity, the food and the festivity will pass. Only the true
essence will remain: Jesus and YOU! The excitement from gifts and gadgets will be gone,
the nice dress will be stored… We will start probably to pack some of the most special
cards, we will clean up… and everything will be back to normal by the first week of the new
year… until we receive of course the bills! Only one thing will never be the same, your
relationship with your Savior, born in Bethlehem.
I want to thank you in a very special way all those who worked so hard to make this
Christmas season not a good one, but a New One. Thank you for your time, your talents,
your sharing. Since our celebrations of the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of
Guadalupe, The Novenas and Posadas to the Baby Jesus, the Choir performances, our
visits to the poor, the sick, the outreach to the needed, everything has been
INCREDIBLE. “All things are possible for one who believes” (Mk 9, 23).
I want to finish my Christmas message with a note to remember the Corporal Works of
Mercy: To feed the hungry; To give drink to the thirsty; To clothe the naked; To harbor
the harborless; To visit the sick; To ransom the captive; To bury the dead. And the spiritual
works of mercy are: To instruct the ignorant; To counsel the doubtful; To admonish
sinners; To bear wrongs patiently; To forgive offences willingly; To comfort the afflicted;
To pray for the living and the dead.
So many of these works have been done in our Parish thanks to your generosity. By
Interfaith Caregivers: 18 visit (58 hours), 8 Transportation (22 hours), 12 calls, 6 medical
transportation (8 hours), 6 shopping (6 hours), 2 chores (3 hours); St Vincent de Paul: 2
Family Assistance, 8 gifts food cards, 4 Home Depot Cards, 6 Visits; El Centro 16 Referral
for Social Services, 1 Home Visit, Clothes and gifts to families (2); OLA Social Concerns: 8
gift shopping cards, 3 Home Depot Cards, 2 Letters of Recommendation, 2 referrals for
Health Services, 5 Visits. OLA Ministry: Number of Households visited 28, Number of
Communions distributed in homes 92, Anointing of the Sick in home 2, Number of health
care facilities visited 6, Number of Communions distributed in health care facilities 97,
Number of visits without Communion 5, Number of confessions to the homebound 3,
Number of funerals 7, Attendees to the Masses of Commemoration 26.
Lord Jesus, receive this work as a small token of appreciation for all you do for us here at O
L A… May the blessings of Bethlehem be multiplied in every one of you, and may you
receive one hundredfold of what you have given.

RIPETENDO LA DECISIONE DI
MARIA
L’angelo Gabriele oggi confronta
Maria con un mistero. Il mistero
della salvezza in Cristo non e’ un mistero risolto,
ma una realta’ al di la’ della nostra
comprensione che noi dobbiamo scegliere di
accettare. Nella liturgia della Chiesa Orientale,
ognuno aspetta per vedere se Maria entrera’ nel
mistero. Dio aspetta, Adamo ed Eva e tutte le
anime dei morti che desiderano il Paradiso
aspettano, angeli aspettano nuovi celesti
compagni. E c’e’ molta gioia quando la sua
decisione e’ ”si”. A noi sono offerte scelte meno
drammatiche, ma il mistero della nostra salvezza
in Cristo non e’ per niente “risolto”. Possiamo
capire un po’ meglio a causa del “si” di Maria.
Possiamo essere un po’ piu’ vicini ad esso per
mezzo della passione, morte e risurrezione di
Gesu’ Cristo. Ma alla fine, rimane sempre un
mistero a cui tutti dobbiamo dare il nostro “si”.
In breve canteremo “Venite, adoriamoLo”. Possa
la nostra preghiera dell’Avvento, il nostro eco
del “si” di Maria, continuare in modo che
possiamo entrare nel mistero della nostra
salvezza in Gesu’ Cristo, Dio fra noi.

READING OF THE DAY
ECHOING MARY’S DECISION
The angel Gabriel today confronts Mary
with a mystery. The mystery of salvation
in Christ is not a mystery that is solved,
but a reality beyond our comprehension that we
must choose to enter into. In the liturgy of the
Eastern Church, everyone waits to see if Mary will
enter into the mystery: God waits, Adam and Eve
and all the souls of the dead who long for paradise
wait, angels wait for new heavenly companions.
And there is much rejoicing when her decision is
“yes.”
We have less dramatic choices offered to us, but
the mystery of our salvation in Christ is by no
means “solved.” We may understand it a bit better
due to Mary’s “yes.” We may be a bit closer to it
through the passion, death, and resurrection of
Jesus Christ. But it still remains a mystery to which
we all must give our own “yes.” Soon we will be
singing “O come, let us adore him.” May our
Advent prayer, our echo of Mary’s “yes,” continue
then, so we may enter into the mystery of our
salvation in Jesus Christ, God among us

Queridos feligreses:
¿Qué cosa puedo decir sobre la Navidad que no se haya dicho ya? Bueno,
incluso es muy difícil decir algo sobre algo que podamos llamar NUEVO. El
mensaje de Navidad ya tiene 2,000 años pero la novedad es que el contenido
del mensaje se RENUEVA en nuestras vidas día a día, año tras año.
En este tiempo todos retrocedemos al niño que llevamos dentro para
continuar la celebración, una celebración basada en los principios de
tradición, religión, espiritualidad y fe. ¿Qué mejor ocasión para poner nuestra
mano en el corazón y preguntarnos qué estoy haciendo con mi vida? ¿Estoy viviendo al
máximo? ¿Qué estoy haciendo por mi Iglesia y por otros?
Al final las decoraciones, el pesebre, la comida y las festividades pasarán. Solo la esencia
verdadera permanecerá: ¡Jesús y TÚ! La emoción por los regalos y accesorios se irá, el vestido
de fiesta se guardará… comenzaremos a guardar las tarjetas mas especiales, haremos limpieza
y todo volverá a la normalidad en los primeros días del nuevo año… ¡claro, hasta que
recibamos las cuentas! Solo una cosa nunca volverá a ser la misa: tu relación con el Salvador
nacido en Belén.
Quiero agradecer de manera especial a todos quienes trabajaron duro para hacer de este
tiempo de Navidad no solo uno bueno sino Uno Nuevo. Gracias por su tiempo, su talento, su
compartir. Desde nuestras celebraciones de la Inmaculada Concepción, Nuestra Señora de
Guadalupe, las Novenas y Posadas para el Niño Jesús, la participación de los Coros, nuestras
visitas a los pobres y enfermos, atención a los necesitados, todo ha sido INCREIBLE. “Todo
es posible para el que cree” (Mc 9, 23).
Quisiera concluir my mensaje navideño con una nota para recordar las Obras Corporales de
Misericordia: dar de comer al hambriento; dar de beber al sediento; vestir al desnudo; dar
posada al necesitado; visitar al enfermo; socorrer a los presos; y enterrar a los muertos. Y las
Obras Espirituales de Misericordia son: Enseñar al que no sabe; dar buen consejo al que lo
necesita; corregir al que está en error; perdonar las injurias; consolar al triste; sufrir con
paciencia los defectos de los demás; y rogar a Dios por vivos y difuntos.
Muchas de estas obras se han hecho en nuestra Parroquia gracias a vuestra generosidad.

transportes médicos (8 horas), 6 asistencias con compras (6 horas), 2 tareas (3 horas); San
Vicente de Paul: 2 asistencias a familias, 8 tarjetas de comida, 4 tarjetas de Home Depot, 6
visitas; El Centro: 16 referidos para servicios sociales, 1 visita a casa, ropa y regalos para
familias 2; OLA Servicios Sociales: 8 tarjetas de compras, 3 tarjetas de Home Depot, 2 cartas
de recomendación, 2 referidos para Cuidado de la Salud; Ministerios de OLA: Número de
familias visitadas 28, Número de Comuniones distribuidas – en hogares 93, Unción de los
enfermos en hogares 2, Número de hospitales visitados 6, Número de Comuniones
distribuidas – en hospitales 97, Unción de los enfermos en hospitales 1, Número de visitas sin
Comunión 5, Número de confesiones a postrados/enfermos 3, Número de funerales 7,
Número de participantes en las Misas de Conmemoración 26.
Señor Jesús recibe estas obras como una pequeña muestra de agradecimiento por todo lo que
Tú haces por nosotros aquí en OLA… que las bendiciones de Belén se multipliquen en todos
y cada uno de ustedes y que reciban de vuelta el cien por ciento de lo que han dado.

LECTURA DEL DÍA
IMITAR LA DECISIÓN DE MARÍA
El ángel Gabriel hoy le presenta a María
un misterio. El misterio de salvación en
Cristo no es un misterio que se pueda
resolver, sino una realidad más allá de
nuestro entendimiento en la cual nos decidimos a
participar. En la liturgia de la Iglesia Oriental, todos
esperan para ver si María participará en el misterio:
Dios espera, Adán y Eva y todas las almas de los
muertos que anhelan el Paraíso esperan, los ángeles
esperan tener nuevos compañeros celestiales. Y hay
gran regocijo cuando su decisión es un “sí”.
A nosotros se nos ofrecen opciones menos dramáticas,
pero el misterio de nuestra salvación en Cristo de
ningún modo queda “solucionado”. Puede que ahora
lo entendamos un poco mejor gracias al “sí” de María.
Puede que estemos un poco más cercanos a él
mediante la pasión, muerte y resurrección de
Jesucristo. Pero un misterio al cual todos debemos dar
nuestro propio “sí”. Ya pronto estaremos cantando
“Venid y adoremos”. Que nuestra oración de
Adviento, a imitación del “sí” de María, continúe para
que podamos participar en el misterio de nuestra
salvación en Jesucristo, Dios-con-nosotros.

SOLEMNIDAD DE LA EPIFANÍA
DEL SEÑOR
Domingo 4 de enero de 2015: Esta
Solemnidad, a la cual algunos conocen
como “Pequeña Navidad” conmemora
la Adoración de los Reyes Magos y la
Manifestación de Nuestro Señor a los Gentiles. Las
misas seguirán el horario regular de los domingos.
FIESTA DEL BAUTISMO DEL
SEÑOR: Esta fiesta que se celebra el
domingo 11 de enero y con la que
concluye el tiempo navideño, nos
brinda la oportunidad de ir, como
peregrinos en espíritu, a las orillas del Jordán, para
participar en un acontecimiento misterioso: el
Bautismo de Jesús por parte de Juan Bautista. Con
la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, concluye la
temporada de Navidad y empieza el tiempo
Ordinario.

PM en la Iglesia San Joaquín Misa trilingüe. El Pesebre de
Navidad, que nos recuerda el gran misterio de la
Encarnación y la Natividad de Nuestro Señor, será
retirado después de un servicio especial. En esta
misa final del Tiempo de Navidad, la imagen del
Niño Jesús será llevada en procesión al altar
principal donde tendremos oportunidad de
venerarlo. Al concluir la Misa serviremos refrescos
en el Salón Parroquial.

ofrenda. Las personas solteras mayores de 21 años,

THE "W" IN CHRISTMAS
Each December, I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experience. I
had cut back on nonessential obligations -- extensive card writing, endless baking, decorating, and even overspending. Yet still, I found
myself exhausted, unable to appreciate the precious family moments, and of course, the true meaning of Christmas.
My son, Nicholas, was in kindergarten that year. It was an exciting season for a six-year-old. For weeks, he'd been memorizing songs
for his school's "Winter Pageant."
I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd be working the night of the production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his
teacher. She assured me there'd be a dress rehearsal the morning of the presentation. All parents unable to attend that evening were
welcome to come then. Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise.
So, the morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room, I
saw several other parents quietly scampering to their seats. As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each class, accompanied
by their teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor. Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song.
Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the holiday as Christmas," I didn't expect anything other than fun,
commercial entertainment - songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer. So, when my son's class rose to sing,
"Christmas Love," I was slightly taken aback by its bold title. Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in fuzzy
mittens, red sweaters, and bright snowcaps upon their heads. Those in the front row-center stage -- held up large letters, one by one, to
spell out the title of the song. As the class would sing "C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the letter C. Then, "H is for Happy,"
and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, "Christmas Love."
The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed her; a small, quiet, girl in the front row holding the letter "M" upside
down -- totally unaware her letter "M" appeared as a "W." The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this little one's mistake.
But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her "W." Although many teachers tried to shush the
children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together. A hush came over the audience and eyes
began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we celebrated the holiday in the first place, why even in
the chaos, there was a purpose for our festivities. For when the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear:
"C H R I S T W A S L O V E" And, I believe, He still is. May each of you have a Merry Christmas as you reflect on His amazing

Families in Philadelphia next year. We look forward
to celebrating with our neighbors to the west, and
indeed all attendees from around the globe, both the
Holy Father’s visit, and the extraordinary value that
the overall experience promises to provide.
Archbishop Charles Chaput has been assured of our
interest and support, and we are happy for whatever
part we can play in this truly worthwhile endeavor.
