From the Pastor Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today we commemorate all the faithful departed. We call this day “All Souls Day” and we remember those people who are now in Purgatory and awaiting their final preparation for Heaven. These poor souls are suffering greatly in that purgation and our prayers and sacrifices are needed in order to assist them. The offering of the Mass, of course is the most powerful remedy that we can give to them and so at every Mass we remember the faithful departed. But, today in a special way we call to mind that great group of men, women and children now undergoing their purgatory and we specifically offer the Masses today for their relief and for their final salvation. We don’t hear enough about Purgatory today. At funerals there is a tendency to eulogize the departed and “canonize” them. It is for our consolation but it is a disservice to the faithful departed if in fact they are not yet in Heaven but suffering gravely in the fires of Purgatory. It is better not to assume that they have already arrived in Heaven but rather to assume that they are probably in Purgatory because only those who have been totally perfected are able to enter into Eternal Bliss with God in Heaven. It is better to pray for the departed and offer Masses for the relief of their suffering and to hasten the day of their final release from Purgatory than to neglect them assuming they have already arrived in Heaven. The whole month of November is dedicated to the Holy souls. On all the days from November 1st through November 8th inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. Partial indulgences are granted to those who recite Lauds or Vespers of the Office of the Dead, and to those who recite the prayer: Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domini, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiscan en November 2, 2014 pace” (Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace). I will be holding down the Fort while Father Juan Pablo attends a special Conference in Chicago. No Monday morning 7:00 a.m. Mass will be offered on November 3rd or November 10th. This coming Friday, November 7th is a special day for the students of our Catholic Schools. There will be a vocations’ day to be held at St. Pius X parish to help our children begin the process of discerning whether or not God might be calling them to enter religious life or the priesthood. Let us pray fervently for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life and for our seminarians and candidates who are from our Diocese. Please welcome the Knights of Columbus for their statewide retreat that they will be participating in this coming Saturday, November 8th with Father Price Oswald. The retreat will go from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will be held here at our parish. I hope and pray that our Councils continue to see an increase in good Catholic men who wish to do something beautiful for God. God bless each of you and have a good week. Fr. Flowers, their favorite toys, favorite music, and so on, are taken to them. The following day, people spend time - some of them all day - at the cemetery with their loved ones who have died. From the ancient customs of the Indians the families pray, talk with them and take them their favorite food. It is a most solemn but joyful day. It is a day to celebrate Christ’s victory over death: “Death, where is your sting?” there is a mocking of death as people make skeletons, candy that represents death and Pan de los Muertos (bread of the dead) and consume them in a kind of role reversal. One of the customs is to build an altarcito (little altar) where one places mementos and pictures of those who have died. There are also favorite foods, candles, statues or pictures of favorite saints, books, and Bibles. Some parishes have begun to build an altarcito where all parishioners can join in honoring the deceased. A remembrance book can be placed to write names in. The altarcito is traditionally left up for the month of November. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Informaciones Generales Párroco: Rev. Timothy Davison Vicario: Rev. Requiescan in pace.”
