A Story that Begins With a Photo
This is a story that begins with a pretty blurry photo; eighty Jews in a Polish town, a
moment after World War II ended. A hand written text discloses the location and
year, not much more than that. Shlomo Abramovich, a journalist and holocaust
researcher who found the photo, happens to meet Moshe, the son of one of the
survivors in the photo, on a train ride. Moshe decides to put it on Facebook in an
attempt to locate the photographed people and the story behind it. (They) say that
senior (citizens) are less connected to Facebook, but in this case the second and
third generation(s) took the ‘share’ task upon themselves. The post picks up
momentum, gets translated into eight languages and the reactions - they come from
all over the world and slowly add more pieces to the puzzle. Only about eight
thousands Jews lived in in the Borszczów County in Poland before the war. After all
the actions and expulsions to extermination camps, only about eighty survived, who
were documented in that same blurry photo. In the series ‘A Story that Begins with a
Post’ the journey to uncover their story is documented, a story that might not have
been uncovered in full if it hadn’t been for the social network.
