BUILDING GOD’S TEMPLE:
I was recently in the National Cemetery in Bushnell for the first time.
I have to say that it is a beautiful place - really worthy of those who gave
their lives for our nation. It is a peaceful reflective space and is impeccably kept - not a blade of grass out of place. It’s good to know that our
dysfunctional government can get something right!
Seeing all those identical headstones neatly laid out in rows with
the brief details of each person’s life and service was sobering. Today is
Veteran’s Day, a day which marks the end of the First World War. That
was supposed to have been the “war to end all wars,” and yet here we
are ninety six years later in a world which is still torn by war and unrest Ukraine, Syria, Nigeria, Venezuela and so on. And sadly many of these conflicts are in the name of religion. It makes
you ask if the Kingdom of God is making any progress in our world.
Well, we are certainly in better shape than we were at the time of Jesus - we’ve abolished slavery, improved the
position of women, made healthcare available for millions, given a basic education to the great majority of our children. All these things would have been thought irrelevant or even subversive at the time of Christ. And yet Christians, and people of good will, have struggled consistently to change things and to bring about a more just and caring
society. And their efforts have paid off.
These people saw beyond the simple acts of mercy and compassion and recognized that it was the system, the
way things were done, that needed to be changed. Instead of ‘being nice’ to their slaves and treating them well,
these people saw that the whole notion of slavery, that one person can own another, is wrong and must end. It wasn’t done overnight - the struggles have lasted centuries. Indeed, we might say that the powerful have simply found
new ways to enslave people but call it by a different name. There are those who ‘give employment’ but pay half the
minimum wage and threaten to deport anyone who dares to question it. There are those who say ‘let the market take
care of things,’ but the market doesn’t care about people, it only cares about making a profit. And it isn’t concerned
who gets hurt while it does so. There are those who say, ‘the poor are just lazy. They need to get off their butts and
get a job.’ But they won’t tolerate any suggestion that we might subsidize the education of the poor or their transport
or their childcare which might make it possible for them to do so.
Last week we reflected on the fact that we are the temple of God, and we heard Jesus say, “stop making my
Father’s house a marketplace.” It seems that, for Jesus, the ‘market’ is just about the worst way to go about establishing His Father’s kingdom!
By all means let’s have our 401(k)s and our IRAs and our investments. But we need to pay attention and ensure that our money is invested in ethical, caring enterprises who see their employees as people, not cogs in a money
-making machine.
Fr. Robert.
We have been trusted a lot.
ATTENTION!!!
God, the Lord, trust us more than perhaps we trust ourselves. Although we
EVERYONE INVOLVED
know our limitations and we suppose ourselves that as we have the limitations
IN THE OCTAVE:
also our neighbor too are the same like we are.
As we learn to overcome the ignorance of God's plan, which involves lis- “SHE'S ONE FOR ALL”
tening to his word carefully and meditating on their terms, but it always takes
AND CHRISTMAS
some of our time. However, He trusts us many talents and qualities to execute
POSADAS
everything that only we can do and what he wants us to realize as human beings.
2014
Because what we don´t do for ourselves, nobody else will do that.
We can recognize that God enriches us with various gifts, not only for the
full development of each, as individuals, in different spheres of family, work, school or college or even in places
for recreation and relaxation, but also in the Church, up to the sky, so that we can become Christians that he has
called, to be able to build the Church and his Kingdom.
Great confidence! He sets himself, his church and the Kingdom in our hands! That confidence becomes also our responsibility. This week we ask Jesus, Lord, give us the grace to respond fully to the deep
trust of God in us and that we might activate us all the more to celebrate the upcoming Marianas and holiday season, each preparing openly and fraternity their different responsibilities in the OCTAVE: SHE'S
ONE FOR ALL and the CHRISTMAS POSADAS OF THE YEAR 2014. (8 nights of preparing for Christmas.)
Celebrate together the joy and all the generous initiative to bring together the gifts and talents that God
has blessed us can together with one voice sing the Glory of his name forever in thanksgiving always.
Fr. Frank

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL
The good news of today’s gospel is the
extravagance of what is being given us.
All we need do is be faithful in ‘small matters.’ The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the rewards given.
When you give food, or clothing you no
longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul, you are sharing God’s extravagant
love.

Squaring the circle
When you look closely at the life of Jesus, you
realize you are dealing with someone who defies
easy description. He clearly was human: walking, talking, eating with those around him, even
weeping when the occasion called for it. Yet he
clearly was more than human, attested to not
only by miraculous events but also by his irreproachable wisdom, unprecedented insight, and
unlimited compassion. What to make of such a
fellow? Pope Leo I answered the riddle for early
Christians by positing the union of two natures in
one person—fully human and fully divine. Thanks
to Leo, we have a full appreciation of the mystery of Jesus the Christ. Spend some time with
this mystery today.
We have placed a book in the Narthex
where you can write the names of those
who may be sick and for whom you
wish us to pray. At Mass we will pray
for "for those who have asked us for our prayers, especially
those in our intention book." You can neatly write names into
the book right up to the start of Mass and the book will be carried to the altar. Please pray for the sick in our Parish who
have asked for our prayers.
The Columbiettes would
like to say thank you for all
the baby bottles that have
been returned. If you have
not returned yours, please
do so as soon as possible.
Your generosity is much
appreciated.

Molina, Grace Molina, Ed Parsley, Jenny Parsley,
Patty Homjak, Marielys Mujica, Irines Acosta, and
